Roma Targets Said El Mala Amid Transfer Market Moves
AS Roma have identified their next big swing in the transfer market. The club are hunting for a new left winger and, according to Geissblog, 1. FC Cologne’s 19-year-old talent Said El Mala is firmly on their shortlist.
This is not a casual enquiry. The Giallorossi are described as willing to meet Cologne’s €50 million asking price, a figure that underlines how highly the Bundesliga club value the teenager. Roma have already been linked with Eintracht Frankfurt’s Jean-Matteo Bahoya at around €45 million, a negotiation that quietly set the bar for what the Romans are prepared to pay in that position. El Mala, clearly, sits in that same financial bracket.
There is a catch. A sizeable one.
Sky reports that El Mala, capped seven times at Germany Under-21 level, does not currently view Serie A as his immediate destination. Roma might be ready. Italy, for him, is not. At least not yet.
Dortmund deal collapses amid anger in Cologne
If Roma are waiting for an opening, it will not come from Borussia Dortmund muscling in. That door has slammed shut.
A move to the Westfalenstadion is now described as definitively off. Geissblog reports that Cologne considered Dortmund’s financial package inadequate, but the numbers were only part of the problem. What really stung at the Geißbockheim was how Dortmund allegedly tried to steer the player.
Cologne were, in their own internal wording, “not in agreement with the manner in which Dortmund are said to have tried to influence the player in order to make a move more likely”. The reaction was immediate. Club decision-makers agreed to break off all negotiations with the Black and Yellows on the spot. No cooling-off period, no slow fade. Just a hard stop.
Leipzig hesitate as the market tightens
With Dortmund out and Roma kept at arm’s length by the player’s own stance, the field narrows. In the Bundesliga, only RB Leipzig remain in the frame as a realistic suitor.
Even there, the situation is fragile. According to Geissblog, Leipzig have informed Cologne that they neither can nor want to meet the €50 million price at this stage. The number is simply too steep for their current budget.
The only scenario that could revive Leipzig’s pursuit is a significant outgoing. If the Saxony club manage to cash in on Yan Diomande, fresh funds would hit the balance sheet and El Mala’s name could move back to the top of their list. Until then, the interest sits in neutral.

In Thursday’s 8-0 pre-season win over Bergisch Gladbach, the 19-year-old scored his first goal of the current campaign, a small but pointed reminder of why the market has swirled around him all summer. Roma are ready to pay. Dortmund are out. Leipzig are waiting on a sale. Cologne are holding their line. The next move, in every sense, belongs to Said El Mala.
