Roma Pursues Mason Greenwood Amid Marseille's Financial Pressure
The numbers alone explain why the phones haven’t stopped ringing. Twenty-six goals, 11 assists, 45 games. One of Ligue 1’s standout forwards and a season that has turned Mason Greenwood into one of the most talked-about names of the summer.
At Marseille, they know exactly what they have on their hands. They also know they may have to let him go.
Roma move to the front of the queue
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Roma have accelerated their push to sign the 24-year-old after his explosive campaign in France. Talks are no longer theoretical. Greenwood’s father is understood to have made contact with the Serie A club to explore a move to the Stadio Olimpico, a clear sign that interest has moved into a more serious phase.
Roma’s position is strong. Qualification for next season’s Champions League gives them both money and a sporting argument few players in Greenwood’s situation can ignore. They can offer a major European stage, a central role, and a club that has already shown it can build around attacking talent.
Relations between Roma and Marseille are also described as positive, an often-overlooked factor when negotiations stretch into the late hours of the window. If the price is right, the pathway between the two clubs is there.
Marseille’s financial clock is ticking
The problem for Marseille is not Greenwood’s form. It is the balance sheet.
After missing out on the Champions League, the Ligue 1 side must raise funds before the end of the financial year on June 30. The DNCG, French football’s financial watchdog, is watching closely. That pressure has pushed Marseille towards a reluctant reality: their best player is also their most valuable asset.
They have set a clear price. Around €50m (£42m/$57m). No discounts, no cut-price scramble. Greenwood’s nomination for Ligue 1 Player of the Season has only hardened that stance and underlined his market value.
Any club wanting him will have to pay properly.
Europe’s elite take notice
Roma are not alone in circling.
Juventus, Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund have all been linked with the England-born forward in recent months, each of them tracking a player whose blend of end product and versatility is hard to find. Clubs from the Saudi Pro League have also entered the conversation, armed with financial muscle that can distort any negotiation.
For now, Greenwood is understood to favour staying in European football. That preference keeps Roma and the other major European contenders firmly in the frame and places the emphasis on sporting projects rather than purely financial offers.
A player in form, a club in limbo
On the pitch, Greenwood has done everything asked of him. He has carried Marseille’s attack through an uneven campaign, delivering the most productive season of his career while the team around him faltered in the final months.
He has also sounded genuinely content with life in France. “This season has sometimes been difficult collectively, especially in recent months, but individually I think I've had a good season,” he told Foot Mercato after being recognised among Ligue 1’s best. “There are some incredible players in this team of the year, so it's nice to receive this trophy. Ligue 1 is a wonderful league. We play incredible matches, and for me, it's one of the best leagues I've played in. I hope I can stay.”
That last line hangs in the air. “I hope I can stay.” The reality of Marseille’s finances may not allow it.
A saga set to define Marseille’s summer
As the June deadline creeps closer, Greenwood’s future is set to become the dominant storyline at the Vélodrome. Roma currently look best placed, but the presence of Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Dortmund and the Saudi Pro League ensures no deal will be straightforward.
Everything comes back to that €50m valuation. Will anyone meet it? Will Marseille, under financial strain, be forced to compromise?
For a player coming off the season of his life, the next move could shape not just his career, but the direction of two clubs on opposite sides of the continent.
