Chelsea Weigh Loan Options for Mudryk's Comeback

Mykhailo Mudryk’s Chelsea career pauses again, but this time on the club’s terms, not a courtroom’s.

After 20 months without competitive football, Chelsea are exploring loan moves for the Ukraine international as he searches for rhythm, fitness and relevance in a squad that has moved on without him. The plan is clear: he needs games, and he is unlikely to get enough of them at Stamford Bridge right now.

Mudryk, 25, has not played a competitive fixture since November 2024, his career abruptly halted by a four-year suspension following an adverse finding for the banned substance meldonium. An agreement has since been reached to resolve the doping case, clearing the way for his return, but the gap is stark. Nearly two full seasons gone.

He has only just begun to feel like a footballer again. Chelsea eased him back with substitute appearances in pre-season friendlies against Juventus, AC Milan and Johor Darul Ta'zim on their tour of Asia. Short cameos, cautious steps, but important ones for a winger whose game is built on explosiveness.

The conversations that mattered most came not on the pitch but in meeting rooms at the end of that tour. Club and player agreed that a loan before the 1 September transfer deadline is the best route back to elite level. Chelsea protect their asset; Mudryk gets the minutes he desperately needs.

A move to Strasbourg is already on the table. The French club sit under the same BlueCo ownership umbrella as Chelsea, making any deal structurally simple and politically tidy. For Chelsea’s hierarchy, it is an obvious solution: controlled environment, aligned interests, guaranteed focus on his development.

Mudryk, though, has his own ideas. He would rather stay in the Premier League, testing himself again in the division that first sold him as a £61m statement signing from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2023. An English top-flight loan would keep him in front of Chelsea’s eyes and in the rhythm of the league he still wants to conquer.

Interest is not confined to England. Several other clubs have emerged as potential destinations, including a number of leading sides in Italy. For a player with his pace and directness, Serie A offers a different kind of stage: tactical, slower in tempo, but unforgiving in scrutiny.

Chelsea can afford to be patient. Mudryk is tied to the club until 2031, one of the ultra-long contracts that defined their early BlueCo era. That length gives them time to rehabilitate not just his fitness but his value, sporting and financial.

The next move will not decide his Chelsea future on its own, but it will define the first chapter of his comeback. After 20 months on the outside, Mudryk finally has a choice again: France, England, or Italy.
