Roberto Mancini is back where Italian football has so often turned in moments of uncertainty – on the Azzurri bench, charged once again with leading the national side out of a storm largely of the federation’s own making.
The FIGC confirmed his return as head coach in an official post on its social media channels, with Sky Italia reporting that his formal presentation will take place on Wednesday. It ends a chaotic search triggered by Gennaro Gattuso’s resignation in April and marked by failed negotiations, political infighting, and a dramatic late veto that reshaped the federation’s leadership.
Mancini arrives free and ready. He left Qatari club Al-Sadd last month and now steps back into international football after his most recent spell in charge of Saudi Arabia. For Italy, it is a return to a trusted figure at a time when options were dwindling and the clock was ticking.
Pirlo Blocked, Maldini and Leonardo Walk
The hunt for Gattuso’s successor had already dragged on when the situation exploded behind closed doors. Andrea Pirlo, initially lined up for the job, saw his appointment blocked at the last moment by FIGC president Giovanni Malago.

“Time was running out and I thought the right person to be coach was Roberto Mancini. He's the best possible choice,” the president said, underlining both the urgency and the conviction behind the move.
Malago also moved to shore up the technical structure around the new coach. He confirmed that Claudio Ranieri, the revered former Leicester City manager and one of the most respected Italian coaches of his generation, will join as technical director.
“The role of technical director, not to be confused with other roles, has not disappeared,” Malago stressed. He revealed that an amendment to the FIGC statute had been approved, allowing another person to also serve as president of Club Italia, the body overseeing the national teams.
“I needed someone to share the choice of Roberto Mancini as coach, and that person is Claudio Ranieri, who signed his commitment a few minutes ago.”
The move pairs Mancini’s authority on the touchline with Ranieri’s strategic presence upstairs, an experienced double act tasked with steadying a federation that has lurched from one crisis to the next in recent months.
