Regis Pitbull, once a striker for Corinthians and Vasco da Gama, now faces a harsh reality. At 49, the ex-professional footballer has become unrecognizable due to his severe addiction to crack cocaine, forcing him to live homeless in Sao Paulo.
Struggling with Homelessness in Pirituba
According to Globo Esporte journalist Emilio Botta, Regis survives beneath tarps, tattered blankets, and cardboard in a small area filled with debris and trash in Pirituba’s northern zone. The addiction has stripped him of his home, dignity, and much of his family and friends' support.
"It's better if they think I'm dead... I don't want anyone to know I exist," he shared during a conversation with Botta, revealing his deep despair.
Concerns Raised by Former Teammates
Worries about his condition first surfaced when former teammates from an amateur club noticed his declining health. His substance abuse issues date back to his playing days, with two positive cannabis tests recorded during routine doping controls.
A Career Overshadowed by Addiction
Throughout his wandering career, Regis scored 49 goals in 170 matches for clubs including Coritiba, Bahia, Portuguesa, as well as teams in Japan, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia. Unfortunately, drug problems worsened after retirement, leading to legal issues like a 2025 arrest related to an assault on a building manager. This incident forced him out of his apartment.
Ongoing Legal Issues and Hope for Recovery
His only remaining apartment faces civil lawsuits over unpaid fees and taxes, threatening foreclosure. Despite this, Globo Esporte reports that Regis still hopes to reclaim his home one day.
