Referee Mathilde Demoncay Concussed in Pre-Season Friendly Incident
A pre-season friendly in eastern France lurched into troubling territory on Saturday when referee Mathilde Demoncay suffered a concussion after being knocked to the ground while trying to break up a mass confrontation between players.
The 26-year-old official was in charge of a warm-up match between French side Metz and Dutch club Fortuna Sittard at Schlossberg Stadium in Forbach when tempers snapped late in the first half.
Flashpoint in front of a “Respect the referee” sign
The incident unfolded in the 40th minute. What began as a routine tussle over a shirt pull between two opposing players quickly escalated. The pair squared up, teammates rushed in, and a pushing match turned into a full-blown melee.
Demoncay moved in to separate the players. In the chaos, she was knocked off her feet and fell heavily to the turf. Footage shared on social media showed the scuffle playing out directly in front of a large pitchside sign bearing a bitterly ironic message: “Respect the referee.”
She stayed down for several minutes, clutching her arm, as assistant referees, security staff and medical personnel sprinted onto the pitch. The game stopped. The noise inside the small stadium dropped to a murmur while her condition was assessed.
Local media later reported that Demoncay had sustained a concussion in the collision.
Back on her feet, then forced to step away
After receiving treatment, Demoncay got back up and, in a striking show of determination, continued the match as an assistant referee once play resumed. She completed the remainder of the first half on the touchline.
At half-time, though, it became clear she could not continue. Another assistant took over her duties for the rest of the match as she left the field for further evaluation.
On the pitch, Metz went on to win the friendly 3-1 as both clubs continued preparations for their new seasons. Off it, the incident overshadowed the result.
Fortuna Sittard’s match report on their website referred to the clash and Demoncay’s fall as a “remarkable moment” but offered no further detail. Metz did not mention the episode in their own report.
A summer tune-up between two clubs looking ahead to the campaign instead left a stark image: a young referee lying on the grass, felled in the very moment she tried to impose control, beneath a banner pleading for the respect the game still struggles to guarantee.
