Real Madrid Considers Tchouameni Sale as Manchester United Eyes Move
Real Madrid are prepared to cash in on Aurelien Tchouameni this summer, with Manchester United ready to pounce, despite Jose Mourinho’s wish to build his new midfield around the Frenchman, according to the Sun.
This is not a fringe player being eased out. Tchouameni has been at the heart of Madrid’s engine room for four years, a cornerstone in a side that has lifted both the Champions League and La Liga during his time at the Bernabeu. He arrived as the long-term answer at the base of midfield and, for a while, looked exactly that.
But his status has shifted. After a spat with Federico Valverde last season, the 26-year-old no longer sits in the “untouchable” category in the Spanish capital. The hierarchy now see an opportunity: move him on at peak value and launch an audacious push for Manchester City’s Rodri.
Mourinho, newly installed and already wrestling with the realities of Madrid politics, had planned to keep Tchouameni at the core of his side. The calculation changes, though, when a player of Rodri’s calibre comes into play. With that possibility on the table, the club’s stance has reportedly hardened. Sentiment yields to strategy.
United, sensing an opening that did not exist a few weeks ago, are in the queue. A fee in the region of £68 million – roughly what Madrid paid to sign him from Monaco in 2022 – is believed to be enough to drag him to Old Trafford.
For United, the move would complete a sweeping midfield overhaul already well underway. They have paid £35 million for Youri Tielemans, finally adding a deeper-lying passer to complement Bruno Fernandes, and £50 million for Andrey Santos, a dynamic, defensively sharp presence who can grow alongside Kobbie Mainoo.
Casemiro’s departure and Manuel Ugarte’s serious injury forced this reset. Now Tchouameni is viewed as the final piece, the player to lock the whole structure in place.
The symmetry is striking. Madrid signed Tchouameni to replace Casemiro when the Brazilian left for United. Two years on, United are trying to prise the France international away from the Bernabeu to step into the very void Casemiro has left behind. A full-circle transfer saga, with the same clubs and the same position at its centre.
From United’s perspective, the fit is obvious. Tchouameni would provide the defensive platform that has been missing for years, freeing Tielemans and Fernandes to dictate and create higher up the pitch. He would sit in front of an increasingly settled back four, break up play, and give structure to a side that has often looked stretched and disjointed between the lines.
Santos and Mainoo can develop as a high-energy double pivot in time. Tchouameni, though, is ready-made. He offers the blend of physicality, anticipation and composure on the ball that United have struggled to find since their last great holding midfielder began to fade.
For Madrid, the calculation is harsher. Lose a proven Champions League-level midfielder to fund a move for Rodri, the man widely regarded as the best in the world in that role. Keep Mourinho happy in the short term, or reshape the position entirely if City can be convinced to sell.
The tug of war is clear. Mourinho wants Tchouameni. The club want Rodri. United want a foundation for their next midfield. One decision in Madrid could redraw the centre of the pitch at Old Trafford for years.
