Real Madrid Considers Tchouameni Sale as Manchester United Shows Interest

Real Madrid are ready to listen to offers for Aurelien Tchouameni – and Manchester United have moved to the front of the queue.

United have stepped up their interest in the France international, making enquiries in recent days as they search for a specialist holding midfielder. The need is clear: they have added Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans to their engine room, but neither is a true No6 capable of anchoring the side on his own.

For Tchouameni, the timing is intriguing. Reports in Spain recently suggested the 26-year-old had agreed a contract extension at the Bernabeu, yet no announcement has followed. Officially, he remains tied to Madrid until 2028, a deal that underlines how significant a decision it would be for the European champions to cash in.

Madrid paid big to get him. He arrived from Monaco four years ago for an initial €80m, a fee that could climb to €100m with add-ons. He has since started a World Cup final for France and lifted the Champions League in white. That blend of age, experience and pedigree is exactly what appeals to United’s recruitment team, who have prioritised targets in the 22–26 age bracket.

Inside the Bernabeu, the stance is shifting. New coach Jose Mourinho had initially planned to keep Tchouameni at the heart of his midfield, but the club’s hierarchy are prepared to sell if a suitable offer lands on the table. Sources in Madrid describe United’s interest as “strong”, particularly now that the midfielder’s World Cup commitments with France are over and his future can be addressed head-on.

The landscape around him has changed. Madrid have already secured Bernardo Silva, who operated in a deeper role at Manchester City last season, and still boast Eduardo Camavinga and Federico Valverde in central areas. Both Camavinga and Valverde are under contract a year longer than Tchouameni, giving Madrid further flexibility as they reshape a department that has defined their modern era.

There is another twist. Madrid have been heavily linked with a move for Spain star Rodri, named the best player at the World Cup and out of contract at Manchester City next year. A transfer this summer has been widely touted. If Madrid push ahead for Rodri, Tchouameni becomes the obvious sale to balance both the squad and the books.

For United, the pursuit carries echoes of past decisions – and past regrets. They were offered the chance to sign Tchouameni from Monaco back in 2021, but the budget at the time did not stretch to a major midfield buy. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, then in the Old Trafford dugout, wanted a central midfielder and was a strong admirer of Declan Rice. Tchouameni slipped away. Now, three years on, United are back at the table, likely facing a far higher price.

The Casemiro connection only deepens the narrative. Madrid bought Tchouameni in 2022 as the long-term successor to Casemiro, shortly after United had prised the Brazilian away in a £70m deal amid yet another midfield crisis, days after that bruising 4-0 defeat at Brentford. Two summers later, United are again scouring Madrid’s squad for solutions.

Their record in doing so is mixed. Casemiro shone in his first and last seasons in Manchester and played a leading role in United’s return to trophy-winning form, but he was also part of two of the poorest United sides in 34 and 51 years before the club released him last month. Raphael Varane, signed at 28 in 2021, brought pedigree and delivered on the biggest domestic stages with starts in League Cup and FA Cup final victories, yet persistent injuries curtailed his impact and he too has departed.

Angel Di Maria’s story is even starker. A British-record £59.7m signing in 2014, he lasted less than a year before leaving and was loudly booed on his return to Old Trafford with Paris Saint-Germain in 2019. For every marquee arrival from Madrid, there has been a warning attached.

That is the backdrop as United weigh a move for Tchouameni: a player they once passed on, a profile they badly need, and a selling club that rarely parts with prime assets unless it suits them.

If Madrid do land Rodri and reshape their midfield again, the path for Tchouameni to Old Trafford will open wider. The question now is whether United are finally ready to pay the price for the defensive midfielder they have been chasing for a decade – and whether this time, the story from Madrid ends differently.
