Real Madrid's Contingency Plan: Signing Mokio for €30 Million

Real Madrid have moved to Plan B. And this one costs €30 million.

With Rodri now increasingly expected to choose Barcelona’s project over a return to Spain’s capital, the European champions have swung their attention to Amsterdam and an 18-year-old anchorman they believe can shape their next decade: Mokio of Ajax.

From finished article to raw talent

Rodri was Florentino Pérez’s statement target. A ready-made general for the Bernabéu midfield, a €60m-plus leader to bring order and authority to the engine room. Madrid saw the Manchester City star as the final, polished piece of a squad already stacked with youthful brilliance.

That vision is slipping away towards Camp Nou.

As Rodri edges closer to Barcelona, Madrid have reacted quickly. According to Fichajes, club scouts have pushed Mokio to the top of the contingency list, convinced that the teenager’s frame, stamina and defensive instincts can be moulded into the kind of holding midfielder who dominates La Liga for years.

This is not a like-for-like swap. It is a philosophical pivot.

Rodri would have arrived as the finished product, a guarantee. Mokio is a project. A long-term investment who fits the club’s broader strategy of betting big on elite teenagers before the rest of Europe drives their price into the stratosphere.

Ajax’s new pillar

For an 18-year-old, Mokio’s body of work is already substantial.

By the time he signed his latest contract extension in April 2026, he had amassed 48 official senior appearances and six goals for Ajax, a club that does not hand out minutes easily. At the Johan Cruyff Arena, he has been trusted in several roles across midfield, his versatility only strengthening his case in Madrid’s internal debates.

He can screen the defence, step higher to press, or slide into different tactical shapes without losing his bearings. That adaptability is gold dust for a club that constantly tweaks systems around an evolving cast of stars.

Ajax know exactly what they have. And they have protected it.

Mokio is tied down until 30 June 2031, a lengthy deal that leaves the Dutch giants under no immediate pressure to sell. They can afford to be stubborn. They can afford to wait.

The price of potential

Figures around Madrid point to an opening valuation of around €30m. That number may get the conversation started, but it is unlikely to end it.

For Ajax, this is an academy crown jewel, a player they have developed, showcased and secured on a long-term contract. With that leverage, they can push for a premium well beyond the initial figure being floated in Spain.

Madrid, then, have two battles to win: one with Ajax, one with the player.

They must convince Mokio that leaving so soon after his renewal is the right step, that the pathway at the Bernabéu is clear and that he will not be lost in a galaxy of stars. At the same time, they need to put together an offer that forces Ajax to think twice about holding firm.

Waiting on Rodri

For now, everything is on pause.

Madrid will not move formally for Mokio until Rodri’s proposed switch to Barcelona is officially sealed. Only when the City midfielder’s future is confirmed in Catalonia are Los Blancos expected to push the button and accelerate talks with Ajax.

If Rodri does walk out at Camp Nou instead of the Bernabéu, the response from Madrid will be telling. Turning to Mokio would underline a transfer policy that has already brought in a generation of top-tier prospects and placed the club ahead of the curve.

They wanted a commander for today and may end up with a cornerstone for tomorrow. The question now is simple: how much are Real Madrid willing to pay, and how hard will Ajax make them fight for the next great midfield anchor?
