Real Madrid have cut loose one of their most intriguing academy prospects, confirming the sale of 19-year-old left-back Víctor Valdepeñas to Fiorentina in a deal worth eight million euros.
This is not a clean break, though. Not quite.
Madrid bank the fee now but keep 50 per cent of the player’s sporting rights, a clear signal they believe the teenager’s ceiling sits well above his current status. If he explodes in Serie A and moves on again, they will be waiting at the pay window.
From La Fábrica to Florence
Valdepeñas joined Real Madrid in 2018, an 11-year-old kid walking into La Fábrica with all the usual dreams. Six seasons later, he walks out as a UEFA Youth League champion and a full international prospect in the making, swapping Valdebebas for Florence and the noise of the Bernabéu for the colour of the Franchi.
His first-team experience in Spain has been fleeting but symbolic. According to Spanish newspaper “Marca”, he made a single La Liga appearance last season under Xabi Alonso, coming on against Deportivo Alavés. One cameo, but one that told him – and everyone watching – that the club saw something there.
Now Fiorentina are betting that “something” will grow into a cornerstone of their back line.
The Italian club have handed him a contract running all the way to 2031. That is not a speculative punt. It is a long-term investment, a statement that they see a modern full-back in the making: young, quick, and mouldable in a league that still values defensive craft as much as attacking flair.
Madrid’s Calculated Goodbye
The timing is no accident. The agreement drops on the eve of a friendly between Real Madrid and Fiorentina, a meeting that suddenly carries an extra storyline beyond pre-season fitness and tactical tweaks.
In their official statement, Madrid traced Valdepeñas’ journey from academy hopeful to first-team debutant, noting his arrival in 2018, his six years in the youth setup, his breakthrough last season and his role in lifting the UEFA Youth League title. The club thanked him for his commitment and extended their good wishes to him and his family for this new stage.
Strip away the formalities and the structure of the deal says just as much. Eight million euros now, half of any future sale later. Madrid do not usually cling to percentages unless they are convinced a player can grow into something far bigger away from the shadow of their own squad.
For Valdepeñas, the move is clear-cut. At 19, he trades the traffic jam of elite competition in Madrid’s first team for a league and a club where minutes are there to be seized. For Fiorentina, it is a chance to shape a raw defender into a long-term starter or a future windfall.
The next chapter begins in Florence. The question is whether, one day, that 50 per cent clause will look like shrewd foresight from Madrid—or a reminder that they let another one get away.
