Real Madrid are working on a deal to prise Rodri away from Manchester City, and there is genuine belief in the Spanish capital that an agreement for the 30-year-old Spain captain can be struck, according to reports in Spain.
This is not a routine enquiry. Rodri is the heartbeat of Pep Guardiola’s side, the metronome and safety net rolled into one. Whenever City wobble, he steadies them. Whenever they need control, he provides it. Losing him would mean ripping out the spine of a team built meticulously over years.
Madrid know exactly what they’re doing. With Toni Kroos gone and Luka Modrić edging towards the end, they are hunting a ready-made leader for a midfield already stacked with youth and talent. Rodri fits that profile perfectly: La Liga experience, Champions League pedigree, the armband for Spain.
The question now is not whether Madrid want him. It’s whether City dare to listen.
Arsenal’s double midfield play – and an audacious move for Julián Álvarez
While Madrid push for Rodri, Arsenal are trying to redraw their own midfield map.
Bruno Guimarães remains the name in bold on Mikel Arteta’s shortlist. Newcastle’s Brazilian enforcer is still viewed as Arsenal’s primary target this summer, with the club testing the waters with a £70m offer that Newcastle are expected to reject. The player, though, is understood to be keen on the move.
Arteta, by all accounts, is prepared to go higher. Reports in Spain suggest he would be willing to climb towards £90m to get Guimarães through the door. That is the level of commitment Arsenal believe is needed to close the gap at the very top of the Premier League.
Yet Arsenal’s ambitions this summer don’t stop at midfield.
In Spain, there is talk of a bold, complex move involving Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez. The 26-year-old Argentina international, currently at Manchester City, is being eyed by Arsenal in a player-plus-cash deal that would send Sweden forward Viktor Gyökeres, 28, to Atlético.
On paper, it’s a three-club chain that would reshape front lines in both England and Spain. For Arsenal, Álvarez would bring relentless work rate, pressing from the front and a proven eye for goal at the highest level. For Atlético, Gyökeres would add power and direct running to Diego Simeone’s attack.
Pulling off that kind of deal, though, demands rare alignment between all parties. Arsenal are clearly willing to be creative to land the profile of forward they want.
Roma look to Oscar Bobb as PSG stall on Yan Diomande
In Italy, Roma have turned their attention to Oscar Bobb. The Norway winger only arrived at Fulham from Manchester City six months ago, but Roma are already exploring a move for the 23-year-old.
It’s a sign of how quickly reputations can rise. Bobb’s technical quality and ability to operate between the lines have not gone unnoticed, and Roma see an opportunity to add a modern wide creator to their ranks if Fulham are prepared to listen.
Higher up the food chain, Paris St-Germain have yet to make their long-discussed formal bid of £102m (120m euros) for RB Leipzig’s 19-year-old Ivory Coast winger Yan Diomande. That hesitation has reopened the door for a cluster of elite clubs.
Liverpool, Arsenal, Real Madrid and Manchester City are all watching closely. As long as PSG delay, Diomande remains one of the most intriguing open battles of the window: a teenager with explosive talent, courted by the very top tier, waiting to see who moves first with conviction.
Manchester United stand firm on Bruno Fernandes
Not every captain is in play.
Despite speculation over his future, Manchester United are not looking to sell Bruno Fernandes. The 31-year-old Portugal midfielder has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford, but the club’s stance is clear: he is not on the market.
United’s rebuild has many moving parts. Letting their most productive and influential attacking midfielder leave would add another problem to a list already long enough. For now, at least, Fernandes remains the fixed point in a shifting project.
Chelsea’s defensive talks with Como and a move for Kerim Alajbegovic
In Serie A, Como are expected to sit down with Chelsea on Saturday as they push to sign Trevoh Chalobah. The 27-year-old England defender is a serious target, but Chelsea will not allow him to leave for less than £30m.
Chalobah needs minutes and stability; Chelsea need to trim a bloated squad while still protecting asset value. Como, ambitious and upwardly mobile, sense an opportunity to bring in a Premier League-ready defender if they can meet the asking price.
At the same time, Chelsea are looking the other way along the age curve. The club have submitted an initial offer for Bayer Leverkusen winger Kerim Alajbegovic. The 18-year-old Bosnia-Herzegovina international is the kind of profile Chelsea’s recruitment department has chased relentlessly in recent years: young, technically gifted, and potentially available before his price explodes.
Fábio Vieira pushes for Hamburg return
One player who appears to have made up his mind is Fábio Vieira.
Arsenal and Hamburg are in talks over the 26-year-old Portugal midfielder, who wants to join the Bundesliga club after a loan spell there last season. His time in Germany has clearly left a mark, and the desire is strong to turn that temporary move into something more permanent.
For Arsenal, it’s another decision in a summer full of them. To finance the kind of deals they are chasing at the top end of the market, they will need exits that make sense for both squad balance and the players themselves.
Rodri, Guimarães, Álvarez, Diomande, Chalobah, Vieira – different positions, different leagues, but the same underlying question hangs over all of them: who is truly untouchable when Europe’s giants decide it’s time to rebuild?
