Real Madrid is closing in on Yan Diomande, and this time it feels definitive. Negotiations with Leipzig accelerated sharply in the last few hours, to the point where the deal is now described as virtually done. Diomande waits in Austria, already in pre-season with his current club, effectively on standby for the call that sends him to Madrid for his medical.
If everything continues at this pace, the agreement could be made official as early as tomorrow.
Leipzig had publicly announced on social media this morning that Diomande had rejoined training. On the surface, it looked like business as usual. Behind the scenes, though, the German club and Madrid were locked in intense talks, working through the final details of one of the biggest moves of the summer.
His trip to Austria might have suggested to some that negotiations had stalled. It was nothing of the sort. Leipzig had explained that the former Leganés winger had been ill, which delayed his arrival at the training camp compared to his teammates. The journey was a medical and professional necessity, not a statement about the transfer.
Madrid ready to smash their own transfer record
This is not a routine signing for Madrid. It is a financial leap.
The Spanish giants are preparing to break the bank for the Ivory Coast winger. Initial figures indicated a fee of around 120 million, already placing Diomande among the most expensive signings in the club’s history. Recent talks, driven by Leipzig’s firm stance at the table, have pushed that number upwards.
The outcome could be historic. The final package may surpass the 117 million paid for Cristiano Ronaldo and even edge past the more than 100 million invested in Eden Hazard and Jude Bellingham, whose deals, with add-ons, were also projected to reach around 120 million. Diomande is now on the verge of stepping into that elite bracket — and potentially eclipsing it.
Madrid know exactly what that means. This is not just about adding another attacker. It is a statement of power, a long-term bet on a player they see as central to the next era at the Bernabéu.
A transfer tangled in agency disputes
The money was one hurdle. The lawyers were another.
Beyond Leipzig’s demands, the operation dragged on because of a complex legal battle around Diomande’s representation and image rights. Even so, the governing body is not expected to block the move. A provisional transfer license could be granted, allowing Diomande to complete his switch while the off-field dispute continues along its own, slower legal path.
