Rangers Sign World Cup Defender Olwethu Makhanya

Rangers have dipped back into the transfer market to make South Africa centre-back Olwethu Makhanya their eighth signing of the summer, prising him from Philadelphia Union for an undisclosed fee.

The 22-year-old arrives at Ibrox on a four-year contract, with an option for a further year, as Derek McInnes continues to reshape his squad before the Scottish Premiership campaign gets fully into gear.

Makhanya has climbed fast. He broke into the Philadelphia Union first team only last year, but forced his way into the side and stayed there, racking up 53 appearances in Major League Soccer and catching the eye far beyond the United States.

For the defender, the move ticks off a lifelong ambition.

"I can't even explain how I am feeling right now, it is honestly a big honour and a huge blessing for me to join such a big club with so much history. I can't wait to get started," he said after sealing the deal.

"For me, it has always been a dream to play football in Europe, ever since I was a kid, so to be here is a dream come true."

That dream was built far from Glasgow. Makhanya came through at Stellenbosch in South Africa, where his form at club level propelled him onto the international stage. His rise was underlined when he earned a place in South Africa's squad for the 2026 World Cup.

He did not feature at this summer’s finals, but the call-up alone underlines the regard in which he is held at home and the ceiling Rangers believe he has yet to hit.

Manager's Perspective

McInnes, speaking ahead of Friday’s Premiership opener away to Dundee United, made it clear this is a signing for now and for what comes next.

"He's got a lot of athleticism and good potential," the Rangers manager said. "And while he's coming from the MLS, to a different country and a different type of football, we feel he's got the attributes that can cope with that."

The challenge is obvious: swap the rhythms of MLS for the intensity and scrutiny of life at Ibrox, where mistakes are magnified and expectations rarely dip. Rangers, though, see a modern defender with pace, range and room to grow.

Eight signings in, McInnes has his rebuild well under way. The real test, for Makhanya and his new club, starts when the whistle blows at Tannadice.
