Rafael Leao's Manchester United Transfer Saga Intensifies
Rafael Leao’s admiration for Manchester United has dragged a long‑running transfer saga into sharper focus, with the AC Milan forward openly namechecking the club and the race for his signature narrowing.
The Portugal international has grown into one of Serie A’s headline acts since swapping Lille for Milan in August 2019. Across 291 games in all competitions, he has produced 80 goals and 65 assists, often ripping through defences with the kind of swagger that led British GQ to brand him a “global superstar”. Max Allegri and CBS Sports have both gone further, calling him “world-class”.
At his peak, Milan treated him like it. The Italian giants once slapped a price tag in excess of €100million (£87m) on their prized winger, a figure designed to scare away all but the most serious bidders. That stance has softened. After a frustrating campaign and with Leao refusing to commit to a new deal, Milan are now prepared to listen at around €50m (£43.5m). For a player of his age and profile, it is a very different conversation.
Manchester United have been in that conversation for some time. On May 1, intermediaries offered Leao’s services to the Premier League club, with his camp actively pushing for a move this summer. The noise has only grown louder.
In a recent interview, relayed by Italian journalist Alfredo Pedullà, Leao was asked which English clubs he keeps an eye on. His answer did little to cool the speculation.
“Of course, I watch the Premier League a lot,” he said. “I like Manchester United, especially for Cristiano Ronaldo, who is my idol. But Arsenal is also a team I follow on TV.”
Those few lines matter. When a player talks like that, supporters listen, and so do sporting directors. If Leao has any say in his destination, United and Arsenal suddenly look like the natural landing spots.
The reality is more complex. His future will be shaped by who actually comes to the table and how strong those offers are, both for Milan and for the player. For now, one club appears to be edging ahead.
On May 23, Gazzetta dello Sport reported that United and Fenerbahce are currently showing the strongest interest. It is an intriguing contrast: the global pull of Old Trafford against the passionate, intense world of Istanbul and the Turkish Super Lig.
From Leao’s perspective, the choice feels obvious. A move to United would allow him to follow the path carved by Ronaldo, step into the Premier League he says he “watches a lot” and test himself at the centre of one of football’s biggest stages. Fenerbahce remain a heavyweight in their own right, but the Turkish top flight simply cannot match the Premier League’s reach or its spotlight.
United, for their part, are not just circling Leao. They are deep into Serie A already. The club are closing in on a £38m deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, and the expectation in some quarters is that Leao will be the next target out of Italy once that move is finalised.
Paris Saint‑Germain and Bayern Munich have also been offered Leao, just as United have. For now, though, both European powerhouses are prioritising other names. That leaves the field more open for United, and potentially for Fenerbahce, to press their case.
INEOS, keen to reshape United’s squad with a sharper, more opportunistic edge, have already been linked with creative ways to bring Milan to the table. On April 30, they were tipped to offer up to three players in part‑exchange to drive the fee down further, a sign of both their interest and their determination to work within financial constraints.
Leao would not arrive into a vacuum on United’s left flank. The club are casting a wide net in that area, tracking Morgan Rogers, Yan Diomande and Iliman Ndiaye as they look to refresh their options out wide. The situation is complicated further by ongoing uncertainty around Marcus Rashford, whose future has been clouded by “complications” over a potential permanent move to Barcelona and fresh questions over his long‑term role at Old Trafford.
All of that feeds into one central issue: United need clarity in attack, and soon. Leao, with his direct running, power and star profile, offers exactly the kind of statement signing INEOS might use to mark a new era.
The admiration is no longer a secret. The price is no longer prohibitive. The Premier League dream is there, waiting. Now the question is whether United turn a flirtation into a bid that forces Milan – and Leao – to make a definitive choice.
