PSG vs Aston Villa: UEFA Super Cup Clash in Salzburg
Barely three weeks after the World Cup final, Europe is already reaching for its first piece of silverware. In Salzburg, under the lights of the Salzburg Stadium on Wednesday night, Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa meet in the UEFA Super Cup – a curtain-raiser with far sharper edges than a routine “season opener” suggests.
Kick-off is at 9pm local time (19:00 GMT), with the build-up starting hours earlier and the sense of a new campaign rushing into view.
PSG chase rare back-to-back glory
The Super Cup has always been a strange trophy. One match, neutral ground, two teams still shaking off the summer. Yet history clings to it. Only three clubs have retained it in the modern era. PSG, Champions League winners and last year’s Super Cup victors after a penalty shootout against Tottenham, can become just the fourth side to go back-to-back, following Real Madrid’s 2016 and 2017 triumphs.
Luis Enrique knows this stage. He has won both of his previous Super Cups as a coach. Across from him stands Unai Emery, who has lost all three of his. That contrast hangs over the game like a tactical subplot: one coach who seems to collect European trophies, another who keeps walking into the same August wall.
Yet PSG arrive in Austria looking anything but settled.
Their pre-season has been staggered and fragmented, shaped by the World Cup’s long shadow. Players have trickled back into training at different times, depending on how far they went in the tournament – or if they went at all.
Ousmane Dembele, fresh from a Ballon d’Or and a World Cup in which he struck six goals and laid on two assists for France, only rejoined the squad on Monday. He walked back in alongside compatriots Desire Doue and Bradley Barcola, and Spain’s World Cup-winning midfielder Fabian Ruiz, whose calm, precise control underpinned Spain’s semifinal win over France.
Some, though, have been grinding away for weeks. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, denied a World Cup stage after Georgia failed to qualify, has had a longer pre-season than most and looks primed to start. The left flank is his territory, and he is expected to occupy it again, with new signing Maghnes Akliouche likely to patrol the opposite wing.
Akliouche’s arrival from Monaco has another layer. It may signal the end of Barcola’s PSG story. The winger, who scored three times at the World Cup, is heavily linked with Liverpool and could be on the move before the window shuts. PSG, as ever, rebuild while they compete.
The French champions will also lean on a familiar face to Villa supporters. Lucas Digne, sold by Villa to PSG on Sunday for around 10 million euros, is back where his elite journey truly began. Born in the Paris suburbs, signed by PSG from Lille in 2013, then sent out into Europe – Roma, Barcelona, Everton, and finally Villa, where he became one of Emery’s most reliable performers across 182 Premier League appearances.
Now, at 33, he returns to Paris colours and could line up against his former club within days of leaving Birmingham. A new-old chapter, written in fast-forward.
Fitness clouds linger over several key PSG names. Barcola, Dembele, Doue, Ruiz, Achraf Hakimi, Lucas Hernandez and Warren Zaire-Emery are all doubts. If Luis Enrique sticks close to the projected XI, he may turn to Safonov in goal, with a back line of Zabarnyi, Marquinhos, Willian Pacho and Nuno Mendes. Joao Neves, Vitinha and Dro Fernandez are tipped to form the midfield, with Mbaye and Mayulu supporting Kvaratskhelia in a fluid front three.
It is strong. It is also patched together.
Villa reshaped and restless under Emery
For Aston Villa, this is not just a glamour date with Europe’s elite. It is a checkpoint in their evolution under Emery.
This will be the start of his fourth full season in charge, and the team that walks out in Salzburg will look noticeably different from the one that lifted the Europa League by dismantling Freiburg 3-0 in last season’s final.
Villa’s midfield, the heartbeat of Emery’s side, has been ripped open. Morgan Rogers has gone to Chelsea. Youri Tielemans has left for Manchester United. Digne, a constant on the left for years, is now in the opposite dressing room.
Emery and the club have moved quickly, but not everything has gone their way. Swiss World Cup standout Johan Manzambi has arrived but will not feature; a knee injury has ruled him out. Brazilian midfielder Joao Gomes has come in from relegated Wolverhampton and is expected to bring bite and urgency in the centre of the pitch.
Villa, back in the Champions League for the second time under Emery, are trying to knit a new core while keeping their European momentum alive.
They do not come into this unarmed. Their projected XI has Bizot in goal; a back four of Matty Cash, Victor Lindelof, Pau Torres and Ian Maatsen; Joao Gomes and Boubacar Kamara anchoring midfield; John McGinn, Emiliano Buendía and Alejandro Garnacho supporting Tammy Abraham up front.
But the injury list is long enough to make any manager wince. Leon Bailey (muscular), Manzambi (knee) and Amadou Onana (knee) are all out. Garnacho, McGinn, Emiliano Konsa, Emiliano Martinez and Ollie Watkins are all listed as doubts with various fitness and injury concerns, Garnacho also nursing a facial issue.
Emery’s challenge is clear: replace the control and creativity lost in midfield, manage a stretched squad and still go toe-to-toe with one of Europe’s most lavishly assembled sides.
A brief, sharp history between the clubs
The recent past offers a warning to PSG and a reason for belief at Villa.
The clubs have only met twice, in last season’s Champions League quarter-final. Villa won the second leg 3-2, a wild, breathless match that showcased their attacking threat and their refusal to fold on big nights. It still was not enough. PSG’s 3-1 win in the first leg in Paris carried them through on aggregate.
Those 180 minutes left a mark. Villa know they can hurt PSG. PSG know they cannot drift through this fixture on reputation alone.
Numbers, nerves and a political edge
The data tilts towards the French champions. Opta’s supercomputer ran 10,000 simulations of this match and gave PSG a 45 percent chance of winning in 90 minutes. Villa’s probability of victory in normal time sat at 29.6 percent. A draw – and with it extra time and possibly penalties – came in at 25.5 percent.
On paper, then, PSG are favourites. On grass, the gap is narrower.
The night carries another story, one that stretches beyond tactics and team sheets. The referee, Omar Artan, stands at the centre of a growing power struggle between UEFA and FIFA.
Artan, widely regarded as Africa’s top referee last season, was dramatically barred from officiating at the World Cup by the United States just days before the tournament, on the basis of undisclosed “vetting concerns” and alleged links to terror organisations. No proof was made public. The decision stunned the refereeing community.
UEFA’s response has been pointed. By handing Artan the Super Cup, the European body has not only backed a referee it considers elite, but also sent a deliberate message to FIFA at a time when relations between the two organisations are fraying.
The rift has deepened since UEFA led the opposition to Gianni Infantino’s aborted plan to sell an interest in the World Cup. Now, in Salzburg, a single appointment with a whistle has become a symbol of defiance.
A trophy, a statement, and a season opening fast
Strip away the politics and the probabilities and the Super Cup still matters in simpler ways.
For PSG, it is a chance to plant an early flag, to show that last season’s Champions League win was not a peak but a platform. For Villa, it is an opportunity to prove that their Europa League title was not a one-off surge but the start of something sustainable, something that can stand up to the hardest light.
Emery will try to shake off his Super Cup curse. Luis Enrique will try to extend his perfect record. One of them will walk away with a medal and momentum. The other will leave with questions.
