Peter Okidi Appointed Assistant Coach at KCB Football Club

Peter Okidi is back in the FKF Premier League – and this time he is stepping into one of the most demanding dugouts in the country.

KCB Football Club on Friday confirmed the former Shabana boss as their new assistant coach, installing him as the right-hand man to seasoned tactician Robert Matano ahead of the 2026–2027 campaign.

“The club is delighted to announce the appointment of Peter Okidi as the club's assistant coach who will deputize head coach Robert Matano ahead of the new season,” the Bankers said in their statement, hailing a coach “with a wealth of coaching experience” and an “impressive career across Kenyan football.”

It is a significant move for Okidi, whose last two jobs have been short, sharp stints. He parted ways with Shabana by mutual consent in March, then took on a brief rescue mission at National Super League side Mombasa United, stepping in after the exit of Gilbert Selebwa. Now he walks into a far more stable project, one built around a clear ambition: turning KCB into league champions for the first time.

Okidi’s journey has rarely been straightforward, but it has been steady. He first came to wider prominence in 2013 with Nakuru All Stars, before later taking charge of Nakuru Bucks and the Kenya U15 boys’ side. Those roles have given him a reputation as a builder of teams and a shaper of young talent – qualities that should mesh neatly with Matano’s hard-edged, title-chasing mentality.

KCB are not hiding their intent. The appointment of Okidi is one of several calculated tweaks to a technical bench being retooled for a genuine tilt at the FKF Premier League crown next season. The Bankers have also moved to strengthen specialist areas: former Gor Mahia goalkeeper trainer Boniface Oluoch has come in as goalkeeper coach, while performance and analysis have been bolstered through the hiring of Tobby Owino as the club’s new video analyst.

For a club that has often threatened but never quite broken through, these are not cosmetic changes. They are the kind of moves a team makes when second place is no longer acceptable.
