Nottingham Forest have made a major statement in the market, landing Côte d’Ivoire defender Ousmane Diomande from Sporting in a deal reported to be worth £34.2m.
The 22-year-old centre-back, fresh from featuring in Côte d’Ivoire’s World Cup squad, has signed a four-year contract at the City Ground, with Forest holding an option to extend for a further season. It is the kind of investment that signals intent, not caution.
Forest’s chief football officer, George Syrianos, did not hide the club’s excitement. “He has fantastic experience for a defender of his age. Playing a crucial role in title winning teams and going into the latter stages of the Champions League puts him in a great position to integrate well here at Forest,” he said, underlining why the club were prepared to go so hard for him.
Diomande’s rise has been sharp. He started his professional career in Denmark with FC Midtjylland before Sporting moved for him in January 2023. From there, he barely looked back. He racked up 132 appearances for the Portuguese side in all competitions, anchoring a defence that mixed domestic dominance with European ambition.
He became a central figure in Sporting’s Champions League campaign last season, starting both legs of their quarter-final tie against Arsenal. On the international stage, he played the full 90 minutes in Côte d’Ivoire’s World Cup group-stage win over Curaçao, another marker in a career that is accelerating quickly.
Forest now inherit that momentum. A young defender with Champions League and World Cup minutes in his legs, stepping into a club that has made a habit of bold moves since returning to the Premier League. The expectation will match the fee.
Fulham smash Northern Irish transfer record for Charles
Across west London, Fulham have moved decisively of their own, completing the signing of midfielder Shea Charles from Southampton for a reported £30m – a fee that would set a record for a Northern Ireland international.

Jorgensen heads to Strasbourg for game time
While big money flowed in England, one of Chelsea’s goalkeepers has headed to France in search of regular minutes. Filip Jorgensen has joined Strasbourg on a season-long loan for the 2026-27 campaign.
The 24-year-old arrived at Stamford Bridge in 2024 from Villarreal and has since made 36 appearances for Chelsea. He was a constant presence in Europe last season, starting all but one of the club’s Conference League matches and featuring 12 times across all competitions.
