Nicolo Tresoldi Keeps International Future Open Until 2027
Club Brugge forward Nicolo Tresoldi has decided to delay his decision on whether to represent Germany or Italy at the senior international level. The 22-year-old, currently starring for the German U21 team, will wait until after the 2027 U21 European Championship before making a final choice.
A Divided Heart Between Two Countries
Tresoldi is caught in a tug-of-war between his birth country Italy and Germany, where he developed as a footballer. Despite strong interest from both the German Football Association (DFB) and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), he plans to continue playing for Germany's U21 side through the upcoming European Championship cycle. He told Sky Germany that his feelings are evenly split: "My heart is 50:50. Both countries mean a lot to me."
Discussions with Jurgen Klopp
The situation became more personal when Jurgen Klopp, the German national team coach, reached out directly to Tresoldi. Klopp, who has followed Tresoldi's Champions League performances closely, held conversations that went beyond typical coach-player talks. Tresoldi described their dialogue as "like a father-son conversation," praising Klopp's understanding of the dilemma and noting, "He said the door is always open for me."
Roberto Mancini’s Appeal to Italy
Italy’s head coach, Roberto Mancini, has also expressed interest in convincing Tresoldi to join the Azzurri. Tresoldi confirmed he responded to Mancini with the same honesty he shared with Klopp. Born in Sardinia and raised in Italy before moving to Germany at age 13, Tresoldi holds a strong bond with Italy beyond family roots. "It’s not just that my father comes from Italy; I was born there and grew up there," he explained.
Current Commitment and Upcoming Matches
For now, Tresoldi remains dedicated to Germany’s U21 team under coach Antonio Di Salvo. He looks forward to continuing his development and competing at the 2027 U21 Euros before deciding on his senior future. Tresoldi is set to play in Germany’s upcoming European Championship qualifier against Latvia U21.
