Newcastle United are closing in on Ajax teenager Sean Steur in a move that underlines a clear shift in the club’s transfer strategy – younger, quicker, hungrier.
The 18-year-old midfielder is understood to have agreed in principle to a deal running until 2031, with Newcastle preparing a medical on Tyneside as talks move towards completion. An initial fee of around £20m has been lined up, with a further £3m in potential add-ons as Eddie Howe reshapes his squad for the next phase of his project.
Wilson moves in the shadows
Behind the scenes, Newcastle’s transfer chief Ross Wilson has been busy. The Scotsman is working on multiple deals at home and abroad, but it is Steur’s capture that has caused a stir in the Netherlands.

That “bright future” now looks likely to play out in black and white stripes rather than red and white.
Howe’s new-look engine room
This move is not happening in isolation. Newcastle have already banked a huge £100m from Sandro Tonali’s sale to Tottenham Hotspur, and they have wasted little time reinvesting.
Bazoumana Toure has arrived from Hoffenheim for £43m, another sign of a squad being retooled with athletic, modern profiles before pre-season kicks off. Steur would add yet more legs and ambition to a midfield that Howe wants to crackle with “energy”.
