Newcastle Set to Sign Ajax Star Sean Steur as Tonali Replacement

Newcastle United are on the brink of reshaping the heart of their midfield, closing in on Ajax teenager Sean Steur in a deal worth around £23m.

Only 18, two-footed, and already carrying the weight of serious expectation in Amsterdam, Steur has been touted as the brightest midfield prospect to emerge from Ajax since Frenkie de Jong. That comparison alone tells you the scale of the gamble – and the potential reward.

De Jong traded Ajax for Barcelona in 2019. Now Steur, capable of operating both as a No 6 and a No 8, is poised to swap the Dutch capital for Tyneside, where the demands are different, the tackles heavier, and the spotlight just as unforgiving.

At St James’ Park, he will walk straight into a battle for the role vacated by Sandro Tonali. Eddie Howe is expected to pit him directly against Lewis Miley, another teenager Newcastle rate extremely highly, to anchor and energise the side’s central midfield. No rush, though. The plan is to give Steur time to absorb the Premier League’s intensity, to grow into the pace and physical edge rather than be swallowed by it.

That patience is possible because Newcastle have already made their big midfield move. Tonali’s departure to Tottenham, in a transfer that could eventually be worth £100m to the club, has forced a recalibration of Howe’s project. The Italian’s exit removes an established star but frees up room – financially and tactically – for a different kind of build.

Steur fits that brief. He began last season in Ajax’s youth ranks, then surged through to the first team, ending the campaign with 25 senior appearances. It did not take long for coaches and scouts across the Eredivisie to circle his name as one of the division’s standout young midfielders, a Netherlands Under-19 international with the blend of composure and ambition Ajax teams are built on.

Now that education is set to continue in black and white, in a league where talent is only the starting point. If Newcastle get this one right, the Tonali money may end up funding the spine of their midfield for the next decade.
