Mykhailo Mudryk Returns to Football After Suspension

Mykhailo Mudryk stepped off the plane in Hong Kong to a wall of camera phones and outstretched shirts. For the first time in months, the attention had nothing to do with a courtroom or a hearing. It was about football again.

The Chelsea winger, 25, is available to play after the FA and World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) brought his long-running case to a close, cutting short a four-year suspension that had threatened to derail his career at its peak. The disciplinary process ended in his favour following an appeal, and with that, the doors of the game swung open once more.

Now comes the hard part: deciding where his second act begins.

Alonso welcomes a “special player” – but no guarantees

Mudryk has flown straight into Xabi Alonso’s pre-season plans, joining Chelsea’s squad in Hong Kong as they begin their summer tour. He arrived on Monday and was immediately mobbed by supporters at the airport, a vivid reminder that his name still carries weight, whatever the last year has done to his rhythm.

Alonso has already described the Ukraine international as a “special player”, and there is genuine intrigue inside the camp about what he might offer after so long in the cold. Yet Chelsea have made no promise that he will be part of their long-term picture.

The message to Mudryk is clear: train, integrate, show where you are. Then the club will decide.

He has been working alone, away from the main group, since December 2024 after testing positive for meldonium from a sample taken in October that year. The substance has been on WADA’s prohibited list since 2016 and is known to boost endurance, but Mudryk has consistently insisted he never knowingly took it.

A crucial twist has changed everything. Due to an update in WADA’s testing processes, officials accept that if his 2024 sample were analysed under today’s standards, it would not even be recorded as a violation. That shift has effectively rewritten the context of his case and opened the door to an early return.

Interest mounting across England and Europe

Chelsea’s stance, for now, is one of controlled patience. They and Alonso are prepared to give Mudryk time to adjust to the intensity of elite training again, to reconnect with teammates and rebuild his sharpness after months in isolation. Only then will they move on his future.

But the rest of the market is not waiting quietly.

Coventry City, now managed by former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard, have already made their interest known. Lampard worked with Mudryk briefly during his second spell at Stamford Bridge, handing him eight appearances, and believes there is still a player worth backing beneath the disruption and the noise.

Two other Premier League clubs have also enquired about his situation, while three more sides from across Europe are monitoring developments and exploring the possibility of a deal. For a winger whose last year has been dominated by legal documents and anti-doping jargon, the sudden rush of football decisions might feel dizzying.

Chelsea, though, are in no rush. All avenues remain open: stay and fight for a place under Alonso, leave on loan to rebuild form and confidence elsewhere, or move on permanently if the right bid lands on the table.

A career at a crossroads

Mudryk’s journey to this point has already been dramatic. Signed from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023 for £62 million, he arrived in west London as a symbol of Chelsea’s aggressive rebuild and as one of Europe’s most exciting wide prospects. The ban, and the months of solitary training that followed, halted that momentum brutally.

Now he finds himself sharing a flight to Hong Kong with new signing Danny Welbeck, stepping into a pre-season that could define the next phase of his career. The club have told him honestly: nothing is guaranteed, but nothing is closed off either.

For Mudryk, the noise around his name finally sounds like football again. The question now is simple, and ruthless: where will he prove that the “special player” Alonso sees is still there, waiting to burst back into the spotlight?
