Middlesbrough Set to Sign Dynamic MLS Player Arfsten
Boro are closing in on a deal for one of MLS’s most dynamic wide players, with Columbus Crew’s versatile defender-winger poised to swap Ohio for Teesside.
Multiple sources indicate that Arfsten will travel to England in the coming days to finalize a move to Middlesbrough, in a deal worth up to $7.5 million including add-ons and bonuses. Columbus are set to retain a sell-on clause, underlining how highly they still rate his long-term value.
This is not a transfer conjured up overnight. Boro have tracked the 25-year-old for some time, pushing hard last summer before talks eventually cooled. The interest never really went away. French side Toulouse also tried to tempt him to Ligue 1 with a bid for 2025, but Boro have now moved decisively to get the deal over the line.
The first word of the transfer emerged via The Athletic, and the move fits a clear pattern on Teesside.
An American core with Columbus roots
If the paperwork is completed as expected, Arfsten will become the third USMNT player in Boro’s squad – and the third with ties to Columbus.
Morris, who arrived in 2024, has already become one of the pillars of this team. His influence helped drive Boro all the way to last season’s promotion playoffs, where they fell agonizingly short in the final and were condemned to another year in the Championship. That near miss has shaped everything since.
Determined to turn playoff heartbreak into a genuine promotion push, Boro moved early this summer to land Berhalter from Vancouver Whitecaps for around $2 million. His contract in MLS was running down and set to expire in the winter, but Boro chose not to wait, paying a fee to bring him in now and fold him straight into their Premier League chase.
Arfsten would add another layer to that American spine – and crucially, he offers something different.

Drafted by Columbus Crew in the 2023 MLS Draft, Arfsten has climbed quickly. He has grown into one of the standout wingbacks in MLS, his performances earning All-Star selections in each of the last two summers. That consistency, across both flanks and in multiple systems, has turned him from a promising draft pick into a proven two-way force.
His club form pushed him into the USMNT picture. Arfsten made his international debut in 2025 and has already collected 21 caps. He was trusted enough to make the World Cup roster and featured at this summer’s tournament, coming off the bench against Belgium.
