Mason Greenwood Nears Fenerbahce Move as Manchester United Eyes Profit

Manchester United may be about to cash in on a player who no longer wears their shirt – but still sits on their balance sheet.

Mason Greenwood’s resurgence at Marseille has already rewritten his football story. Now it could reshape United’s summer as well.

The 24-year-old forward, who left Old Trafford for the Stade Vélodrome in 2024, is claimed to have reached an agreement over personal terms with Turkish giants Fenerbahce. The move, if completed, would trigger a hefty sell-on clause that United inserted into the deal that took him to Ligue 1.

From Old Trafford exile to Marseille revival

Greenwood has rebuilt his career in France. In the season just finished, he scored 16 goals and supplied seven assists in 32 Ligue 1 appearances, emerging as one of Marseille’s most dangerous attacking outlets.

That form has inevitably drawn attention. With Marseille missing out on Champions League qualification, the expectation inside the European market is that this summer will be the moment for a new move. Roma, Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus have all been linked with interest, a reminder of how quickly his stock has risen again.

But the most concrete noise right now is coming from Istanbul.

Fenerbahce candidate claims four-year agreement

Fenerbahce presidential candidate Hakan Safi has gone public, declaring that the club have an agreement in place with Greenwood.

“We have signed a four-year agreement with Mason Greenwood,” he said, adding that the forward has already proved himself at the highest level of European football.

“He has agreed to join Fenerbahçe during the most valuable and productive years of his career.

“I said I would bring a star player. Today, I am experiencing the justified pride of keeping my promise.”

The words are bold, and they raise the stakes. Safi’s claim underlines Fenerbahce’s intent to land a marquee signing, but the hardest part of the deal still lies ahead.

Marseille’s price – and United’s cut

Personal terms might be in place, but Marseille still control the transfer. Reports in France suggest the Ligue 1 side want around £47.5 million for Greenwood, a fee that reflects both his numbers and his age profile.

United will be watching every development. When they sanctioned his £26 million sale to Marseille, they protected their financial interest with a substantial 40 per cent sell-on clause.

If Marseille get their asking price and that percentage is applied to the full fee, United would bank in the region of £19 million. For a club juggling multiple priorities in the transfer market and under pressure from financial regulations, that is not a side note. It is a potential boost that could help shape their own recruitment plans this summer.

Marseille weigh up their options

Inside Marseille, Greenwood’s future remains an active discussion. Sporting director Gregory Lorenzi set out the club’s stance in an interview with L’Equipe, making it clear that the situation is open – but delicate.

“He [Greenwood] is one of the players that we are really thinking about [with regard to] their future. If an opportunity presents itself, naturally, we will think about it.

“But there is the club's position [and] that of the player. It is also up to us to manage internally to find the best possible solution for all parties.”

The message is obvious: Marseille know they have a valuable asset, but they also recognise the need to balance the wishes of the player, the club’s sporting ambitions and the financial realities.

A transfer that echoes back to Manchester

For United, Greenwood’s next move is no longer about tactics or team selection. It is about timing, valuation and the fine print of a clause inserted almost as a footnote to his departure.

The forward’s journey has already taken him from Old Trafford to Marseille. If Fenerbahce complete the deal, the next stop could be Istanbul – and a significant cheque landing back in Manchester.
