Marianucci Injured Before Allegri's Napoli Campaign

Massimiliano Allegri’s Napoli project has taken a heavy hit before a competitive ball has even been kicked.

Luca Marianucci, the 22-year-old centre-back hoping to force his way into the first-team picture this summer, has suffered a serious injury to his left knee that is expected to keep him out for a lengthy spell.

The damage came in a pre-season friendly, the sort of game meant to build rhythm, not wreck plans. Introduced as a substitute against Celta Vigo, Marianucci lasted just 25 minutes before crumpling and being forced off in the 1-1 draw.

The initial concern on the touchline has now been confirmed by scans. After undergoing tests at the Pineta Grande Hospital, Napoli released a stark medical update, explaining that the defender has sustained a high-grade medial collateral ligament injury in his left knee following a contusion and sprain in that match.

For Marianucci, the timing could hardly be worse.

The towering defender had returned from a loan spell at Torino in the second half of last season, determined to convince a new coach and stake a claim in a revamped backline. Since arriving from Empoli in 2025, he has managed just two appearances in a Napoli shirt. This pre-season was meant to be his audition. Instead, it has become a setback that could stall his momentum just as the door seemed to be opening.

For Allegri, it strips away one more option in an area of the pitch where stability is non-negotiable. A new coach, a new cycle, and now one fewer central defender as he tries to construct a reliable defensive unit for the 2026-27 campaign.

Napoli’s medical staff will now map out the next phase. They will monitor Marianucci closely before deciding whether he requires surgery or can attempt a conservative rehabilitation programme. Only then will a clearer timeline emerge, but the club already accepts he faces a prolonged period on the sidelines.

The calendar offers no sympathy.

Napoli open their Serie A campaign away to Genoa on August 22, a fixture that will demand defensive cohesion from the first whistle. Eight days later, the Partenopei step out at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona for their first home match of the season, against Como. Those games were supposed to be part of Marianucci’s push into the rotation.

Instead, Allegri heads into them with one more problem to solve and one promising defender stuck watching from the stands, wondering how long it will be before he can restart the fight for his place.
