For Cucurella, the symbolism runs even deeper. He grew up at Barcelona’s famed academy, La Masia, but his voice carried no hesitation as he described what it feels like to cross the divide and land at the Bernabéu.
“It is a source of pride. I think few people can say they have worn this shirt,” he told Marca, leaning straight into the history he has just joined. “We have watched great legends. It is a club with a great history, and the biggest club in Europe.”

Cucurella’s journey is not the usual Real Madrid fairytale. A La Masia product choosing the capital’s giants is always going to raise eyebrows, but for the full-back, this feels like the culmination of a long, patient climb rather than a sudden twist.
“Being here today is a privilege and an honour, and above all a reward for all the effort I have put in throughout my career,” he said. “I have waited a long time, and it felt like it took a long time, but I am here now.”
That last line lands with particular weight. For years he watched Real Madrid’s great European nights from afar, as a rival, as a neutral, as a football romantic.
“As a spectator, I saw all those magical nights, the comebacks at the Bernabéu, and all the Champions League titles the team has lifted.”
Now those nights are no longer something to admire on television. They are his reality, his responsibility.
“As a player, and as a child starting to play football, it is very difficult to turn down the chance to play for a club like this,” he continued. “The opportunity came to me and I did not hesitate for a moment. Getting the chance to live it from the inside and take part in it is a very big responsibility, but it is also a beautiful and important challenge.”

Early days with Mourinho
On the training pitch, Cucurella has already had his first taste of life under José Mourinho, a coach whose presence still fills every room he walks into.
The defender’s first impression? Freedom with an edge.
“A lot of confidence and spontaneity,” he said of the Portuguese’s approach. “We have to do on the pitch what we are good at, and above all enjoy ourselves. I think what we all want is to win and to have a great year.”

“I was already excited to get to know my teammates,” he admitted. “I spoke with some of them after they sent me messages. It has been a very good start.”
