Manchester United’s search for another midfielder has hit a hard stop in Catalonia. Marc Bernal, the Barcelona teenager who had quietly climbed near the top of their wishlist, is going nowhere.
United have already spent heavily to reshape the heart of their side. Andrey Santos has arrived from Chelsea in a £50million deal, a bold move for a player still moulding his reputation at the top level. None of it has moved Barcelona. The message from the club is blunt. They never had any intention of letting Bernal leave. The midfielder, the report adds, has “absolute loyalty” to the Spanish champions. For any sporting director plotting a bid, that’s as clear as it gets: don’t bother.
The numbers back up that stance. Bernal’s contract contains a release clause of €500m (£427.5m). It is less a buyout figure and more a statement of faith, a way of ring-fencing a player they expect to build around. Unless Barcelona suddenly decide they want to cash in for a fraction of that sum, a transfer is a fantasy.
His growing importance explains the resolve. Last season, Barcelona handed Bernal a far greater role, and he took it. Twenty-two La Liga appearances in a title-winning campaign, as Barça edged out Real Madrid to reclaim domestic supremacy. That kind of exposure at 19 is not given away lightly.
He also stepped onto the Champions League stage. Six outings in Europe’s elite competition, one goal to his name – a strike against Newcastle United in the last 16 that underlined his ability to influence big nights, not just tidy up in quieter games.
For United, it is a clear setback in one specific lane of their recruitment plan. The club have until 1 September to complete their summer business, and the idea of adding another midfielder has not disappeared with the arrivals of Santos and Tielemans. It just won’t be Bernal.
