Marc-André ter Stegen Joins Ajax on Season-Long Loan
Barcelona have confirmed that Marc-André ter Stegen will spend the season away from the Camp Nou, sealing a one-year loan move to Ajax as the club accelerates its squad and salary reset.
The German goalkeeper, once an undisputed pillar of the Catalan side, had slipped out of the starting XI and onto the list of players the club were keen to move on. His sizeable wages and diminished role pushed Barça toward a solution, and Ajax have provided it.

The move also reunites ter Stegen with coach Michel. Their first spell together, at Girona, never truly took off: injuries restricted the goalkeeper to just two appearances. Barcelona’s statement did not dwell on the exit so much as the legacy. Ter Stegen leaves having won the UEFA Champions League in 2015 and collecting 21 trophies in the Barça shirt. He played 423 official matches for the club, a remarkable total that places him as the eleventh most-used player in their history and second among foreign players, trailing only Lionel Messi.
Those numbers tell their own story: years as the last line of defence for a side that insisted on playing from the back, often under fierce pressure. Now, though, the chapter closes, at least temporarily.
The message from Barcelona was clear: ter Stegen heads to Amsterdam with a mission. During his spell at Ajax, he will look to rediscover the outstanding level he showed so often in Catalonia.
