Manchester United Explores Transfer for Brazil Striker Igor Thiago
Manchester United have made an exploratory move for Brentford’s Brazil international Igor Thiago, with a leading transfer source confirming the club have placed a call to the striker’s camp to gauge his situation.
United’s recruitment team remain locked on their primary mission – finishing a major midfield overhaul with a third new signing in the engine room. A new left-back, with Newcastle’s Lewis Hall at the top of the list, is next in line.
Only once those pieces are in place will the club fully turn to the attack. But the groundwork has already started.
United test the water with Thiago
Ben Jacobs, speaking to The United Stand, revealed that Thiago’s name has been raised in internal discussions at Old Trafford and that United have now reached out.
“Igor Thiago has been discussed, somebody that’s Premier League ready,” Jacobs said, describing the nature of the contact as “more of an internal conversation and a normal player call to understand his situation.”
The message from those close to the deal is clear: United like the player. Prising him away will be another matter entirely.
“Getting him out this summer will be incredibly difficult,” Jacobs added, underlining the size of the task if United decide to push.
Thiago, 25, is coming off a standout season with Brentford, where he hit 22 goals in the Premier League and 25 in all competitions. That form propelled him into the Brazil setup, where he made his international debut in 2026.
The World Cup stage, though, proved a different test. Given several opportunities to impress, he struggled to replicate his club dominance in the intense glare of tournament football. Clubs at the top level will have noted both sides of that story: a prolific domestic scorer still adapting to the highest international stage.
Striker plans hinge on Zirkzee
United’s pursuit of a new centre-forward is complicated by their existing options and budget priorities. The club want an experienced or proven striker to complement their current attack, but that move is not guaranteed.
A key factor is the future of Joshua Zirkzee. As previously reported and reiterated by Jacobs, a fresh striker arrival may depend on whether Zirkzee leaves. If he stays, United’s business up front could be limited to monitoring targets and laying foundations for future windows.
The club have already flirted with a number of names. There was a brief look at a surprise reunion with Danny Welbeck before he committed to Chelsea. Ivan Toney and Ollie Watkins have also been discussed in recruitment circles, but Thiago is firmly in the mix as a realistic – if challenging – option.
For now, United’s hierarchy are keeping their eyes on the main jobs: midfield, then left-back. Yet the call to Thiago’s camp shows the club are quietly positioning themselves, ready to strike if the dominoes fall – and if Zirkzee’s future opens the door to a new No. 9.
