Manchester United's Tchouameni Challenge: Real Madrid's Stance
Manchester United have found their man. On paper, at least.
In Aurelien Tchouameni, they see the ideal heir to Casemiro: a powerful, tactically sharp midfielder who can lock down the centre of the pitch and set the tempo for a new era at Old Trafford. They have tracked him for months, studied his growth since leaving AS Monaco in 2022, and watched him grow into a pillar of Real Madrid’s midfield.
But there is one problem. Real Madrid are not listening.
The Spanish giants have made their stance brutally clear: Tchouameni is not for sale. Not at any reasonable price, not in any conventional negotiation. His contract runs until 2028, and it carries a release clause of €1 billion – a number that is more statement than safety net, a declaration of how central he has become to their project.
United’s need is obvious. Casemiro has gone, Manuel Ugarte’s future is uncertain, and the Premier League club are searching for a new defensive anchor. Tchouameni, with his blend of physical presence, positional discipline and comfort on the ball, fits the brief almost too perfectly.
Madrid know it. And they are acting like a club determined not to repeat the Casemiro saga.
Back in 2022, they only sanctioned the Brazilian’s move to Manchester once the player himself pushed for a new challenge. The message now is similar: they will only even contemplate a sale if Tchouameni walks into the office and asks to leave. Even then, the bar is sky-high. Any club wanting to test their resolve would need to start at around €120 million.
That is the footballing side. The financial side is no easier for United.
Tchouameni already sits among the top earners at the Bernabeu, with a salary package of around €15.5 million per year including bonuses. Matching that, then topping it to tempt him away, would stretch even a club of United’s size, especially with other rebuild priorities on the table.
Mourinho’s Midfield General
The situation has hardened further with the arrival of Jose Mourinho.
The new Real Madrid manager is said to see Tchouameni as a cornerstone of his plans, a player to build around rather than cash in on. For a coach who has always valued structure, control and defensive security, the Frenchman is almost the perfect Mourinho midfielder: strong in duels, tactically disciplined, and increasingly confident in possession.
When a manager of Mourinho’s stature “counts on” a player, that player rarely leaves easily. The idea of Madrid funding any incoming business by sacrificing Tchouameni does not fit the current picture at all.
In fact, Madrid are moving in the opposite direction.
Early talks have already started over a contract extension that would keep Tchouameni at the Santiago Bernabeu until 2031, with an improved salary to match his status. It is a classic Real Madrid move: lock down a core piece long-term, shut down speculation, and send a message to the market.
For now, Manchester United are left on the outside, admiring from a distance, knowing that prising him away would require not just a huge fee, but a dramatic change of heart from both club and player.
While One Door Closes, Another Record Could Fall
If Tchouameni is untouchable, Real Madrid’s ambition has not dimmed. It has simply shifted up the pitch.
In Germany, Bayern Munich are bracing themselves. Reports suggest Madrid are preparing one of the biggest transfer proposals in football history to sign Michael Olise, with a total package that could reach €220 million.
The structure is eye-watering: around €190 million guaranteed, plus a further €30 million in performance-related bonuses. Put together, it would place any deal for the French forward alongside Neymar’s move from Barcelona to PSG in the upper reaches of the all-time transfer list.
Inside the Bernabeu offices, Olise has emerged as the priority attacking target. The buzz around him has been building for months, but his performances at the FIFA World Cup have pushed the conversation into a different bracket. Decision-makers in Madrid now see him as the kind of game-changing attacker worth breaking the bank for.
The logic is clear. At 22, Olise offers goals, creativity and versatility across the front line. He fits the club’s recent strategy of investing heavily in young, elite-level talent who can define the next decade. In their eyes, he is not just another signing. He is a statement.
Bayern Dig In
Bayern, though, are not in the mood to roll over.
The German champions hold a strong negotiating position. Olise has become one of their standout performers over the past year, evolving into a key figure in their attack and one of the most sought-after forwards in Europe. They are under no financial pressure to sell and fully aware that every sparkling performance only inflates his value.
Any Madrid move, then, is unlikely to be quick or simple. This has all the makings of a long, hard negotiation.
From Bayern’s perspective, only an “extraordinary” offer even opens the door. Madrid know that, and the reported €220 million package reflects just how far they are willing to go to test that resolve.
On one side, a club determined to keep a star who has rapidly become central to their plans. On the other, a club that has never been shy about rewriting the transfer market when they truly believe a player is worth it.
Tchouameni locked down, Olise potentially on the horizon. Real Madrid are drawing clear lines over who they refuse to lose and who they are prepared to chase at any cost.
