Manchester United Pursue Tchouaméni as Casemiro Successor

Manchester United have gone back to Real Madrid for Aurélien Tchouaméni, refusing to let the Frenchman slip off their radar as the search for a new defensive midfielder grows more urgent.

Casemiro’s move to Inter Miami has left a clear gap at the base of United’s midfield. The club have already tested Madrid’s resolve once this summer and were turned away. They have come back again.

Tchouaméni had looked set to stay in Spain. After fending off interest last winter and at the start of the current window, Real Madrid were edging towards a contract extension for the 24-year-old. The message from the Bernabéu was stability, not upheaval.

United are pushing against that.

The France international remains firmly on their shortlist as they look for a specialist holding midfielder, not just another body in the middle of the pitch. Internally, his profile is seen as close to ideal: young, physically dominant, tactically disciplined, and capable of anchoring a side that has too often lacked balance.

The recent arrivals of André Santos and Youri Tielemans underline the problem. Both are naturally inclined to play on the front foot, to join attacks and operate higher up the pitch. United still do not have a true replacement for Casemiro’s screening role. Tchouaméni, by contrast, is built for it.

That is where the story gets complicated.

José Mourinho is counting on Tchouaméni for the 2026–2027 season, and Real Madrid see him as central to their medium-term plans. Any attempt to prise him away will demand not just money, but persuasion — and perhaps a change of heart in the Spanish capital.

United have made their move again. Now they have to find out how badly Madrid want to keep their midfield cornerstone.
