Manchester United Target Neco Williams as Full-Back Search Intensifies

Manchester United’s rebuild under Michael Carrick is accelerating, and the net is widening. Midfield has dominated the headlines, but attention is now snapping towards the flanks – and to a former Liverpool defender currently impressing at Nottingham Forest.

Neco Williams, once a promising youngster at Anfield and now a key figure at the City Ground, has emerged as a concrete target. According to BBC Sport’s Sami Mokbel, United have formally registered their interest in the Wales international, joining Newcastle United in the chase while Forest continue talks over a new contract.

For Williams, it is a pivotal moment. For United, it is part of a broader, calculated overhaul.

Carrick’s blueprint takes shape

Carrick steered United to third in the Premier League last season, a finish that restored Champions League football and, with it, a different calibre of transfer opportunity. Old Trafford suddenly looks like a more persuasive destination again.

The plan this summer is ambitious and unapologetically aggressive: at least two midfielders – possibly three – a full-back and a left-winger as a baseline. Not a refresh. A reset.

The midfield department is already close to a dramatic makeover. Andrey Santos has completed his medical and signed his contract, with Fabrizio Romano confirming the deal and a club statement now the only formality. A highly rated talent from Chelsea, Santos fits the profile of a long-term central pillar rather than a short-term patch.

Ederson, though, tells a more complicated story.

Ederson deal in the balance

United have an agreement in place with Atalanta and the player, as Romano has detailed, but the move has not yet crossed the finish line.

Ederson has already undergone an initial medical in the United States. Now comes a second, more detailed examination in England, conducted by United’s own staff, amid reported concerns over a previous knee injury.

Romano explained that Ederson will take this medical in the UK this week, with United to decide their final stance once the results are in and then communicate their position to both Atalanta and the player. Verbal agreements are there. The framework is there. The signature is not.

United are pushing, but they are wary. The message is clear: no risks without full clarity.

Williams on the radar

While the medical team pore over Ederson’s fitness, the recruitment department has turned its gaze to the right flank.

Williams has rebuilt his career at Nottingham Forest, evolving from Liverpool understudy to Premier League regular. His energy, attacking intent and growing defensive maturity have not gone unnoticed. With Forest still in discussions over a new deal, United and Newcastle have stepped into the conversation.

For United, Williams would tick several boxes: homegrown, Premier League-proven, tactically flexible. He offers thrust going forward and the stamina to patrol the entire right side, attributes that fit a Carrick system that demands width and intensity from full-backs.

Forest, for their part, are in no rush to sell. Interest is registered, not yet translated into a bid. But when a club of United’s size starts weighing options, the market tends to move.

Manu Kone enters the frame

The midfield hunt does not end with Santos and Ederson. Italian outlet Corriere Dello Sport reports that United are also considering a move for France international Manu Kone, currently at Roma.

Kone has been identified as one of the most attractive options on the market for a club intent on reshaping its engine room. Roma value him at around €50 million and are prepared to listen to offers that meet that figure. No fire sale, no scramble. Just a clear price and an acceptance that, for the right money, a deal can happen.

For United, that presents another strategic decision. Santos offers youth and upside. Ederson, if cleared, brings athleticism and bite. Kone would add yet another layer of dynamism and depth in a department that has too often looked short of legs and ideas.

A window that will define the next phase

United’s summer is unfolding with purpose but also with tension. Santos is done. Ederson is close but not guaranteed. Kone is under serious consideration. Williams has drawn official interest, with Newcastle lurking and Forest holding their nerve.

Champions League football has given United leverage again. What they do with it over the coming weeks will shape not just Carrick’s options this season, but the club’s trajectory for years.
