In his ideal world, that player is Aurelien Tchouameni.
United circle their ‘dream’ anchor
United’s admiration for the Real Madrid midfielder is no secret. Internally, Tchouameni has long been viewed as the perfect modern holding midfielder: dominant without the ball, disciplined with it, capable of both shielding a back line and launching attacks. He is, in short, the kind of signing that can change the ceiling of a team.
Until now, the pursuit has been largely theoretical. Real Madrid have treated Tchouameni as untouchable, a central piece of their next-generation midfield. But the landscape at the Bernabeu is shifting.
Madrid are now expecting to land Rodri from Manchester City, the World Cup Golden Ball winner and the heartbeat of Pep Guardiola’s side. The Spaniard is understood to be keen on a return home after lifting the World Cup as captain of La Roja, even if his formative years at Atletico Madrid and a spell at Villarreal might once have complicated such a move. Those old loyalties are no longer a barrier.

According to Simply Utd, Real Madrid are now “open to a sale” of Tchouameni, but only at the right price – and that figure is expected to be substantial. United, sensing a rare opportunity, have made fresh contact to explore what a deal might look like.
The interest does not stop there. Eduardo Camavinga is also on their radar, with suggestions that Madrid might be more inclined to listen to offers for him this summer. For now, though, that sits firmly in the realm of speculation rather than a live negotiation.
The focus, the dream, remains Tchouameni.
Yet the dream runs headlong into financial reality. Speaking this week, Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst Railston relayed the internal mood at United after conversations with a club source in Trondheim. The message was blunt: as things stand, a move for Tchouameni is not considered realistic because of the cost.
Inside Old Trafford, the belief is that even if Real Madrid do soften their stance and formally put him on the market, the asking price would likely soar beyond what United can responsibly commit to. That does not mean they would walk away without a fight.
Railston reported that United would “absolutely make an offer” if they received encouraging signals from Madrid over a more attainable fee. Tchouameni is described as a “dream signing” – the kind of player you reshape a budget to try to accommodate. But no one yet knows what number Madrid will attach to him, or whether they will truly be willing to cash in once Rodri arrives.
A window defined by one decision
For Carrick and United’s recruitment team, the equation is stark. They have already moved decisively to add Santos and Tielemans, but the profile they still lack is that dominant holding midfielder to inherit Casemiro’s role. Someone to anchor a side that wants to press high, keep the ball, and go toe-to-toe with the best.
Tchouameni fits that description better than almost anyone in Europe. He is the dream. The question is whether United can turn that dream into a bid Madrid will even consider, let alone accept.
As the Rodri saga edges closer to a conclusion, one decision in Madrid may end up defining United’s entire summer – and perhaps the shape of their season to come.
