Manchester United Target Antonee Robinson After Left-Back Setbacks
Manchester United’s summer rebuild has been driven by midfield headlines, but the quiet anxiety around Old Trafford sits a little wider. Specifically, at left-back.
Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans are already through the door, with one more midfielder expected before the club considers that particular job done. Yet for all the noise in the middle of the pitch, the depth chart on the left of defence looks alarmingly thin.
Right now, Luke Shaw, 31, stands alone as the only specialist left-back in the squad. With Champions League football returning and a heavier schedule looming, United know that is a gamble they cannot afford.
Hall and Lewis-Skelly hopes fade
The plan was clear early in the window: secure a young left-back who could push Shaw immediately and then succeed him in the medium term.
Lewis Hall was the preferred option. Newcastle’s stance, though, has been unmovable. As revealed by Graeme Bailey, the club have flatly refused to entertain offers for the defender after already cashing in on Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.
That position has been echoed elsewhere. David Ornstein reported that Newcastle are not expected to sell Hall in this window, underlining that the departure of Eddie Howe has only strengthened the club’s desire to keep him and potentially extend his contract.
“I do not expect Lewis Hall to be coming to Man Utd,” Ornstein said, adding that midfield and left-back remain two of the key areas United are trying to address.
Attention then flicked to Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly. Young, talented, homegrown – he ticked the same boxes. But Arsenal’s response, according to Football Insider, was equally blunt: no interest in selling an academy graduate, and certainly not to a Big Six rival.
Two targets, two dead ends.
United turn to Antonee Robinson
So United have had to pivot. And this time, the profile is different.
According to talkSPORT, Fulham’s Antonee Robinson has emerged as a serious option. Their chief transfers reporter, Alex Crook, has flagged the USA international as a player firmly on United’s radar.
“Keep an eye on Fulham’s Antonee Robinson, the USA international,” Crook said. “The experienced Premier League campaigner would probably come a lot cheaper than Lewis Hall. He’s someone I’m told is on Manchester United’s radar as well.”
The shift is striking. Hall and Lewis-Skelly represented the future. Robinson, who turns 29 in two days, is very much a signing for the here and now.
A different kind of solution
This is not the long-term succession plan United initially appeared to be chasing. Robinson would arrive closer to his peak years than his development phase, offering experience rather than potential resale value.
What he does bring is Premier League know-how and, crucially for United’s budget, a far more accessible price. The £60m figures floated around Hall and Lewis-Skelly always felt heavy for players still at the start of their careers. Robinson, by contrast, is viewed as a realistic market opportunity rather than a marquee gamble.
United wanted a project at left-back. They might end up with a finished article instead. With the season’s demands closing in and options narrowing, the question now is simple: will pragmatism win out over long-term planning at Old Trafford?
