Manchester United's Summer Transfer Strategy: Carrick's Rebuild

Manchester United enter the final month of the summer window with a squad that looks noticeably different – and a transfer strategy that is anything but quiet.

Michael Carrick has already pushed through five signings as he reshapes the dressing room in his own image. The rebuild is centred on midfield, but the real intrigue now sits around the goalkeepers and a potential big-money move on the wing.

Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos are the headline arrivals in the middle of the park, a blend of proven quality and rising potential that signals a clear shift in how United want to control games.

Behind them, the club have moved to steady the last line of defence. Karl Darlow has arrived as experienced cover and competition for Senne Lammens, who made the No.1 spot his own last season. At the same time, United have quietly stocked the future: young goalkeeper Kit Margetson and highly rated winger Tynan Thompson have both been brought in with a longer view in mind.

This flurry has come against a backdrop of upheaval in the goalkeeping department. Andre Onana has gone back to Trabzonspor on loan, while Altay Bayindir and Radek Vitek have both been linked with moves away. The hierarchy in goal has been shaken, but not yet fully settled.

And United, it seems, have been looking far and wide before committing.

Agent reveals United approach for World Cup standout

The latest twist came from South America. Orlando Gill, San Lorenzo’s goalkeeper and one of Paraguay’s standouts at this summer’s World Cup, has been the subject of Premier League interest – and United were among the clubs to make contact, according to his agent.

Mario Jara, speaking to DSports Radio, confirmed that United had made enquiries about the 26-year-old as his client weighs up a move to Europe.

“We are in talks with English clubs as well as clubs in Germany,” Jara said. “There were enquiries with Manchester United. We only received two concrete offers. We are currently in the negotiation phase.

“The sale is close, the time is right. We have to handle it very carefully because there are many things involved. It's ideal for him to take a step up in quality. He's prepared and capable of playing in any league, without a doubt.

“We're trying to finalise it as quickly as possible for everyone's benefit. It would be very important for San Lorenzo; hopefully, it will come to fruition.”

United, having already secured Darlow, are unlikely to push hard for Gill now, but the approach underlines how aggressively the club have scouted the market for keepers this summer. Lammens may be first choice, yet the club clearly want depth, competition and resale value across the department.

United and Liverpool circle £42m winger

While the goalkeeper situation simmers, the more eye-catching story is developing out wide.

United have been linked with Juventus winger Francisco Conceicao, and the Italian club’s own transfer moves could open the door. Juve’s pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen prospect Kerim Alajbegovic has left them needing to balance the books, and Conceicao is emerging as a likely sacrifice.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, both Manchester United and Liverpool have made enquiries for the 23-year-old, who featured 42 times for Juventus last season. The report claims the Turin side are prepared to listen to offers in the region of £34m to £42m.

That is a serious fee, but also a familiar Premier League number for a young, high-upside wide player. A move to England is described as likely, with Juventus having made the “tough decision” to cash in on the forward to help fund their incoming business.

For United, Conceicao would represent something different in the final third: direct, energetic, and entering his prime years. For Juventus, he is the collateral damage of a squad refresh.

The window shuts on September 1. Carrick already has five new faces through the door. The question now is whether United’s late push includes a £42m winger to change the picture of their attack – and perhaps the trajectory of their season.
