Manchester United Sign Young Goalkeeper Kit Margetson
Manchester United have moved again in the market, confirming the arrival of young goalkeeper Kit Margetson while cranking up their pursuit of Roma midfielder Manu Kone.
United secure Margetson from Swansea
Margetson, 19, joins United after his contract with Swansea City expired, with the Premier League club agreeing a compensation package to reward the Welsh side for developing him from Under-15 level through to the senior setup.
The Wales Under-21 international is steeped in goalkeeping pedigree. He is the son of Martyn Margetson, the former England and Swansea keeper who now works as Wales’ goalkeeping coach. Kit has been around professional environments for years; now he steps into one of the most scrutinised of all at Old Trafford.
United confirmed the deal with an official statement, describing him as an “exciting young goalkeeper” and noting his rapid progress over the last 12 months. Swansea’s own announcement, which referred to him as 20, underlined how closely they had tracked his rise, and how reluctantly they let him go.
Last season gave Margetson his first real taste of senior football. On loan at Cymru Premier side Connah’s Quay Nomads, he played 34 times, kept 10 clean sheets and helped the club qualify for European competition. It was a hard, unforgiving proving ground, far from the polished surroundings he will now find in Manchester, but exactly the kind of experience that tests a young goalkeeper’s temperament.
His form at club level translated into international recognition. Margetson has collected youth caps for Wales and made his Under-21 debut against Belarus in March, another marker in a year of rapid acceleration.
Swansea highlighted his growing status in their own ranks. He had been included in a first-team matchday squad against Millwall towards the end of the 2024-25 season and was a regular presence around the senior group. For a club that prides itself on its academy, losing a homegrown keeper with that trajectory stings, even with compensation attached.
For United, he becomes the second Welsh goalkeeper through the door this summer, following Karl Darlow’s free transfer after his departure from Leeds. It points to a clear strategy: refresh the goalkeeping department with a blend of experience and high-upside youth, building depth behind the established No 1.
Midfield rebuild targets Kone
While the goalkeeping ranks are being reshaped, United’s midfield overhaul is gathering pace.
Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans have already arrived, adding energy and craft to the centre of the pitch. The club now appear determined to land a third reinforcement, with Manu Kone emerging as a prime target.
According to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, United have reached an agreement in principle on personal terms with the Roma midfielder, who caught the eye with France at the World Cup. Those performances on the biggest stage pushed him into the wider European consciousness and, inevitably, onto the radar of clubs with serious ambitions.
The report claims United are ready to table an offer worth close to €50 million (£42.7m) to tempt Roma into a sale. That kind of fee signals more than passing interest; it suggests Kone is seen as a central piece in the next iteration of United’s midfield.
They will not get a clear run at him. Chelsea, Atletico Madrid and Saudi side Al-Ahli are all credited with interest, turning this into a straight fight between competing projects, pay packets and promises of playing time.
United, though, have already laid down markers in this window. They have moved early for key targets, reshaped the spine of the squad and added a layer of youthful potential in positions that once felt neglected.
Margetson’s arrival might not dominate the headlines in the way a big-money midfield signing would, but these are the types of decisions that define a club’s medium-term future. The question now is whether United can match that quiet, long-term planning with a decisive statement in the market for Kone.
