Manchester United Rejects Galatasaray's Bold Bruno Fernandes Bid
Manchester United have no intention of letting their captain walk out the door just as the season starts, no matter how bold the bid.
Galatasaray have made what has been described as an “audacious approach” for Bruno Fernandes, but United are prepared to knock it back immediately, according to The Independent. The Turkish champions are understood to be lining up a substantial financial package for the 31-year-old, who is entering the final 12 months of the three-year deal he signed in 2024.
On paper, there is a glimmer of opportunity. Fernandes’ contract carries a £56million release clause, open to clubs outside England. For a side as aggressive in the market as Galatasaray – who have already lured the likes of Victor Osimhen and Leroy Sane to Istanbul in recent windows – it is exactly the sort of lever they like to pull.
United, though, are treating it as a non-starter.
Club planning is being done with Fernandes at the heart of it. The stance is clear and, for now, unwavering: Bruno Fernandes is not for sale.
Galatasaray dream, United dig in
Reports in May from The Mirror framed Fernandes as a “dream target” for Galatasaray, and the Turkish giants have not backed away from that idea. They see a leader, a goalscoring midfielder, and a marquee name to drive their own ambitions in Europe.
United see something else: their captain, their creative hub, and the standard-bearer for Michael Carrick’s project.
With the Premier League season kicking off on Friday and the transfer window edging towards its final weeks, United are shutting the door on any possibility of a late exit. The club will not sanction a move for their skipper at this stage of the summer, particularly with a Champions League campaign back on the agenda.
Carrick views Fernandes as a central figure in that return to Europe’s top table. The Portuguese international is expected to carry a major share of the responsibility as United look to re-establish themselves among the continent’s elite.
Contract questions can wait
One issue lingers in the background: his deal. United hold an option to extend Fernandes’ contract by a further year beyond its current 2025 expiry, but as things stand there are no immediate plans to offer fresh terms before the season begins.
That could change once the campaign is up and running. Performances, results, and the broader shape of Carrick’s rebuild will all feed into those talks. For now, the club are leaning on the extension option and their firm stance in the market.
Fernandes, for his part, has sounded every inch the committed captain.
“Playing for Manchester United is always a special moment for everyone. At the same time, it brings a lot of responsibility with it,” he said last month. “But I don't think anyone comes to Manchester United thinking that we won't have the responsibility to win again, to be at the top of the Premier League, at the top of European football, because the club's history brings that responsibility.
“Regardless of the most recent years, they were not at the level that the club was used to. I think everyone always believes that we can be the ones who are going to do this, the ones who are going to turn the page, the ones who are going to make it possible for United to fight on all fronts. And I think that has to be special for us players, to realise that we can be the main, let's say, protagonists of this change of history for United to win again.”
Those are not the words of a man pushing for the exit.
A captain at the heart of a reset
United finished third in the Premier League last season, their best placing since 2022/23, and that surge back towards the top has changed the mood around Old Trafford. Carrick now heads into 2026/27 with Champions League football on the horizon for the first time since 2024 and a core group he believes can grow together.
Fernandes sits at the centre of that core. His creativity, relentlessness and influence in the dressing room are all central to what United want to be over the next two years.
Their new campaign begins away to Hull City on Saturday, August 22, with a 12:30pm kick-off. By then, Galatasaray may yet test United’s resolve again. The answer, as it stands, will be the same.
The armband is staying at Old Trafford.
