Manchester United's Midfield Transformation: Santos and Tielemans Set for New Season
Manchester United’s new season starts early on Saturday, and with it, a fresh look at the heart of their midfield.
Carrick’s new engine room is about to take shape.
Santos and Tielemans ready for first steps
United open their 2026/27 Premier League campaign away at newly-promoted Hull City in the 12.30pm BST kick-off, and all eyes will be on two names: Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.
This is not a complete reset like the one unfolding across town at Manchester City, but for United supporters who have grown used to Casemiro anchoring the side for the last four years, the change is significant. The Brazilian’s presence has been a constant. Now, Michael Carrick must redraw the map.
The key question: which pairing will he trust to sit behind Bruno Fernandes?
Tielemans is expected to start, his experience and passing range offering a natural bridge between defence and attack. Santos, meanwhile, is widely tipped to feature at some stage against the Tigers, even if he has to wait a little longer for his first Premier League start in red.
Either way, this weekend feels like the beginning of a new midfield era.
Santos arrives with a point to prove
Santos did not leave Chelsea to be a squad filler.
The Brazilian international chose United in search of a bigger role than the one he was handed at Stamford Bridge. Last season told the story clearly enough: only 13 league starts, just three in the Champions League. On paper, 43 appearances in all competitions looks respectable. Dig deeper and you find 14 matches where he never left the bench.
Chelsea rated him highly and were reluctant to let him go. They saw the talent. They knew what he might become. But with Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo ahead of him, and no European football to stretch the squad, his path to regular minutes stayed blocked.
Santos wanted more than promises. He wanted a pitch, a shirt, and responsibility.
United have offered him that chance.
Why Old Trafford is buzzing about him
The excitement around Santos at Old Trafford is not just about a new face or a big-name signing. It’s about what those who know him best say he can become.
As reported by Cerys Jones, some of his former coaches have praised his “superb football intelligence” and “elite potential” – the kind of traits that catch the eye of a manager like Carrick, who built his own career on reading the game a step ahead of everyone else.
That blend of tactical awareness, composure, and potential makes Santos more than a depth option. He is a project with a high ceiling, dropped into a club that desperately needs a long-term anchor in midfield.
Chelsea’s loss could yet be United’s most important gain.
INEOS push for one more piece: Baleba
While Santos and Tielemans prepare for their first competitive minutes in United colours, the rebuild in midfield is not finished.
INEOS are working to add a third and final piece in the shape of Brighton and Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba. An opening offer of £60 million up front plus £5m in add-ons has gone in, but it sits below Brighton’s valuation.
Talks continue, and there is optimism that an agreement can be reached.
If Baleba follows Santos and Tielemans through the door, Carrick’s options in the middle of the pitch will look very different to the Casemiro-dominated era. For now, though, the focus is on Hull, on that early kick-off, and on whether Santos can turn “elite potential” into the start of something far bigger in a United shirt.
