Manchester United's Midfield Dilemma: Tchouameni and Rodri
Manchester United’s long-running admiration for Aurelien Tchouameni is colliding with the hard reality of this summer’s midfield market – and Barcelona are right at the heart of the problem.
What looked like a slow-burning opportunity at Real Madrid is being reshaped by a bold move from Catalonia for a different prize: Rodri.
Barca’s Rodri push changes the picture
Barcelona have made their first move for the Manchester City midfielder, lodging an opening bid that underlines both their ambition and their financial limits. Their offer, reported at €45m (£38m) plus add-ons, landed well below City’s valuation, with the Premier League champions holding out for a fee north of £60m.
City have a new deal on the table for Rodri, but the Spain international has never hidden the appeal of returning home. Crucially, he is understood to favour a move to Camp Nou over joining Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United project.
Inside the Etihad, there is an acceptance that if a club meets their price, they will not stand in his way. Not happily, but realistically. That stance has given Barcelona encouragement – and left United watching a chain reaction unfold that could close off one of their preferred midfield targets.
Tchouameni locked in – at least for now
United’s interest in Tchouameni is not new and not casual. They made their admiration clear as far back as April, running detailed background checks on the 26-year-old and positioning themselves to move if Real Madrid ever opened the door.
On paper, there was a window. Tchouameni has agreed terms on a new five-year deal at the Bernabeu, yet the absence of an official announcement has kept speculation alive and given rival clubs a sliver of hope.
Madrid, though, have offered no encouragement. No soft signals. No hint of a discount. Internally, they have shown no willingness to sell a player they see as central to their next cycle. With Barcelona now pushing hard for Rodri instead of circling the Bernabeu, the likelihood of Madrid cashing in on Tchouameni has shrunk even further.
For United, the message is becoming clear: the France international is not this summer’s solution.
Another blow from Barcelona
The Rodri pursuit threatens to hand United a fresh setback from a club that has already hurt their plans once this window.
Barcelona’s refusal to trigger the option to sign Marcus Rashford permanently – despite a successful loan spell last season – denied United a straightforward £26m injection into their transfer budget. In a summer where every pound matters, that was a significant missed opportunity to raise funds.
Now, Barca’s focus on Rodri could indirectly shut down United’s Tchouameni hopes, compounding the frustration. One club, two different fronts, the same outcome for Old Trafford: fewer options, less room to manoeuvre.
United’s midfield puzzle
Inside United, the debate is shifting from “who can we get?” to “do we even need another one?”
The club have already committed £85m to Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans this summer, heavy investment that reflects the urgency to rebuild the spine of the team. Add Mason Mount and Kobbie Mainoo to that mix and Michael Carrick suddenly has four senior midfielders competing for two starting spots.
That depth is welcome. It also raises a hard question. Is a third major midfield signing justifiable when other areas of the squad still require attention, especially without the Rashford fee and with Tchouameni seemingly off the table?
United wanted clarity on Tchouameni’s situation. Barcelona’s move for Rodri might just have given it to them – even if it is not the answer they wanted as the window tightens and the season’s demands edge closer.
