Manchester United Pursue Manu Kone Amid Roma's Bid Preparations

Manchester United’s midfield rebuild is gathering pace, and the next piece of the puzzle has a very clear name: Manu Kone.

After bringing in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, United are pushing to add a third central midfielder this summer and have stepped up their interest in the Roma man, whose World Cup campaign with France ends in Saturday’s third-place play-off against England.

For weeks, Kone has been in a holding pattern. The 25-year-old asked his representatives at Excellence Sport Nation (ESN) to freeze any transfer talks until after the tournament, preferring to keep his focus on France. ESN also look after Bryan Mbeumo, while Aurelien Tchouameni, Jules Kounde and Mike Maignan are among their other high-profile clients – a network United know well and have already tapped into.

Now the waiting is almost over.

United and Chelsea circle as Kone’s stance becomes clear

Manchester United are understood to have approached Kone’s entourage, with the player described as willing to sign for the club. Chelsea have also entered the frame, having been credited with an interest and reportedly raising his name with Roma during conversations that involved Alejandro Garnacho.

Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport reports that both Premier League clubs are expected to formalise their interest with concrete offers in the coming days. The timing is no coincidence. Once Kone’s World Cup is done, the green light he gave his agents to resume talks turns into a race.

United, though, hold a crucial advantage. Corriere dello Sport claims the Premier League side are viewed as frontrunners, with a move to Kone’s preferred destination, Paris Saint-Germain, not currently on the table. The midfielder is said to dream of playing for PSG, but with the back-to-back Champions League winners not in the picture, the path is open for Old Trafford.

A decision is anticipated soon. The feeling in Italy is that next week could be decisive.

Roma’s financial reality puts Kone in the shop window

The numbers are clear. Roma want around £47 million for Kone, a fee that would deliver a profit of roughly £34 million on the player and, just as importantly, ease a growing financial strain.

Earlier this summer, UEFA fined the club £5 million for breaching the terms of their settlement agreement and for allowing their squad cost ratio to climb above 70%. Selling Kone at the price they are targeting would go a long way towards closing that chapter and bringing Roma back into line.

Head coach Gian Piero Gasperini has not hidden the context. Speaking to Radio Rai 1, he laid out the constraints the club are working under.

“The financial fair play conditions are never exactly precise or defined, they vary from team to team,” he said. “It’s undeniable that Roma know that we have to balance the budgets, which has been tough in recent years.

“I’d hoped that entry into the Champions League would have been enough, but budgets are important for clubs and must be respected. I think there will be more clarity in the coming weeks.”

Clarity, in this case, almost certainly involves serious talks over Kone.

A breakout year and a World Cup showcase

On the pitch, the midfielder has done his part to drive his price up. Gasperini was quick to underline just how far Kone has come in a short span.

“Kone had a great first half of the season, and then was out of action due to injury for a bit during the second half. He’s having a great World Cup,” the Roma boss said.

“He didn’t play with the France national team last year, but now he’s been able to claim a starting spot. It shows his potential and the work he’s put in.”

That rise – from outsider to starter on the biggest stage – is exactly the sort of trajectory that appeals to United’s recruitment team. They have already added energy and versatility with Santos and experience with Tielemans. Kone offers something different again: a midfielder hardened by Serie A, tested in European competition, and now validated in a major international tournament.

His World Cup ends on Saturday, in a bronze final that will also close the chapter for Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford. For Kone, it may also mark the end of his Roma story.

The next whistle he hears might not be from a referee, but from a club insisting he anchors their midfield for years to come.
