Manchester United's Goalkeeping Overhaul: Vítek Joins Middlesbrough, Bayindir Heads to Celta Vigo
Manchester United’s goalkeeping overhaul is gathering pace, and two more departures are about to underline just how ruthless the reset has become.
Radek Vítek is close to joining Middlesbrough in a deal worth up to £14 million, while fellow goalkeeper Altay Bayindir is on the brink of a season-long loan to Celta Vigo.
For Michael Carrick and Boro, Vítek is not a punt. He is a statement.
The Czech goalkeeper arrives on Teesside after an impressive campaign with Bristol City, where his performances pushed him firmly into the shop window. Middlesbrough, beaten Championship playoff finalists last season, have moved decisively, sensing an opportunity to secure a long-term No 1 as they gear up for another promotion push.
Vítek, 22, joined Manchester United from Sigma Olomouc in 2020 and took the scenic route through the loan system. Spells at Accrington and Austrian side Blau-Weiss Linz sharpened his game, but it was at Ashton Gate where he truly flourished and convinced clubs higher up the food chain that he was ready.
United, though, have not walked away empty-handed or unprotected. The deal with Boro is understood to be worth up to £14m including bonuses, and crucially includes matching rights and a buy-back option. There is also a sell-on clause of up to 35 per cent. If Vítek explodes into an elite-level keeper, United will be first in line to react — and well compensated if they choose not to.
This all comes as Manchester United reshape their own goalkeeping department.
Senne Lammens is established as No 1, and Karl Darlow has arrived on a free transfer to add experience and depth. The Welsh international’s signing followed Andre Onana’s loan return to Trabzonspor, clearing one piece of the logjam. Now Vítek and Bayindir are the next to make way as the club trims numbers and redistributes minutes.
Bayindir’s exit is different in tone but just as telling.
The Turkey international has largely existed in the shadows since his 2023 move from Fenerbahce, serving as back-up and rarely threatening to dislodge the first choice. At 28, he needs games, not warm-ups.
Celta Vigo are ready to offer exactly that. The LaLiga side are closing in on a season-long loan, with the Spanish club set to cover his wages and performance-related bonuses built into the agreement. The pressure on Bayindir is clear: play, perform, and the next step is already mapped out.
Celta hold an option to buy, reportedly set at £3.5m, and United have ensured a sell-on clause would be included if that clause is triggered. It is careful business rather than a clean break, a way to ease a player into a new chapter without slamming the door behind him.
In the space of one summer, United’s goalkeeping picture has shifted dramatically. Lammens as the clear first choice. Darlow as seasoned cover. Onana back out on loan. Vítek and Bayindir heading for new homes, but with strings still attached.
For Carrick, Vítek could be the difference between another near miss and a return to the Premier League. For Bayindir, Celta Vigo is not just a loan. It is a crossroads.
