Manchester United Targets David Raum as Lewis Hall Deal Falls Through

Manchester United’s search for a new left-back has taken a decisive turn towards RB Leipzig’s David Raum, with the German international emerging as a leading option after Newcastle United shut the door on a deal for Lewis Hall.

United have made strengthening at left-back a clear priority in the final weeks of the window. Luke Shaw is into the last year of his contract at Old Trafford, and while he remains a key figure, the club want genuine competition and depth in a position that has repeatedly been exposed by injuries and inconsistency.

Hall had been internally identified as an ideal long-term solution. The Newcastle defender was approved at recruitment level as a top target, but the landscape changed quickly at St James’ Park. After a series of high-profile departures, Newcastle have drawn a firm line: Hall is not for sale this summer.

That stance has forced United to pivot. The interest in Hall has not disappeared, but the energy is now being poured into alternatives. Raum sits at the top of that list.

Raum Gives Green Light to Old Trafford Switch

Raum, widely regarded as one of the Bundesliga’s standout left-backs, is entering the final year of his RB Leipzig contract. His deal includes a release clause of around £34 million, a figure that has already drawn attention across Europe.

Yet the situation may be even more favourable for United. According to TEAMtalk, intermediaries involved in discussions believe a deal could be done for under £30 million in this window, given his contract status and Leipzig’s position.

Crucially, the player is on board. Raum has previously held talks with United over a move to Old Trafford and is understood to have given his approval to any potential transfer. At 28, he is ready to walk into a dressing room chasing trophies on multiple fronts and fight Shaw directly for the starting role.

United’s brief is clear: recruit a left-back who can handle the demands of a season that now includes a return to the Champions League. They need someone who can start in Europe, rotate in domestic competitions, and raise the overall level of the squad. Raum’s availability, price bracket and experience make him one of the most attractive options on the market for that role.

With Jason Wilcox effectively conceding that Hall will not be prised away from Newcastle in this window, United’s recruitment department is expected to accelerate talks around Raum as the deadline edges closer.

A Defender Built for the Big Stage

Raum would not arrive as a project. He would arrive as a finished article.

Capped 39 times by Germany since 2021, he has operated at the highest level for club and country, including in high-pressure international fixtures and Bundesliga title races. His game is built on pace, relentless running and a left foot that can whip in vicious deliveries from wide areas and set pieces.

Those qualities have not gone unnoticed inside Old Trafford. United’s director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, knows Raum better than most, having worked with him at RB Leipzig. Back in 2024, Vivell publicly lauded the defender’s rise, highlighting his rapid development, his ability to cement himself as a regular for both club and country, his speed and dynamism, and his threat from crosses and dead balls.

For a United side that has often lacked consistent supply from wide defensive areas, that profile is hard to ignore. A full-back who can defend aggressively, surge forward, and turn set pieces into a weapon fits neatly into the kind of modern, front-foot football the club is trying to re-establish.

The question now is not whether Raum wants the move. He does. It is whether United move decisively enough, and whether Leipzig are prepared to cash in at a price that suits both sides, before another Champions League rival decides that a proven, prime-age international left-back at a sub-£30m fee is too good an opportunity to pass up.
