Manchester United Set for Cash Boost from Kambwala Transfer
Manchester United are set for an unexpected cash injection as Willy Kambwala closes in on a move from Villarreal to Como, with the Italian club beating Osasuna to his signature, according to The Mirror.
United sold the defender to Villarreal in 2024 for an initial €5.5 million, with a further €6m in add-ons, but the most important part of that deal is now coming into play. The Old Trafford hierarchy insisted on a sizeable sell-on clause, alongside a buy-back option and matching rights for three years, and that foresight is about to pay off.
Villarreal are only expected to receive a modest fee from Como, yet the structure of the agreement means United will still bank a percentage of the final sum. It is not headline money, but it is timely and goes straight into the pot for ongoing recruitment.
Ineos blueprint takes shape
This is no one-off windfall. It is part of a clear pattern under the new sporting structure at Old Trafford.
Sell-on clauses used to appear sporadically in United contracts. Since Ineos took charge of football operations, they have become standard. The club now fights hard to retain a stake in the future of almost every departing prospect.
- Tyler Fredricson’s move to Lausanne-Sport included a high-percentage sell-on clause.
- Radek Vitek joined Middlesbrough with a clause of up to 35 per cent attached.
- Ethan Williams and Ethan Ennis left for Peterborough and Stockport County, respectively, with 50 per cent clauses written into their deals.
United might lose young talent earlier than in previous eras, but they are refusing to walk away empty-handed if those players kick on elsewhere. The Kambwala deal is simply the latest example of that hard-edged approach.
Carrick eyes late-window push
The timing suits Michael Carrick. With the window ticking towards its close, any extra income matters.
"The pressure finally told," in financial terms, as Carrick outlined his stance on late business.
"I just think we're looking to strengthen the squad," he said. "We're certainly working towards that, making the most of the situation that we have and trying to improve things and trying to move forward. You know, I said the same thing to you last time. So, yeah, certainly trying to make the most of the opportunities to finish the window stronger than we went into it. And I think we're a good way to doing that, so far."
United now have limited time to turn this additional revenue into concrete signings. The club are expected to scour the market over the coming days, weighing up both permanent and loan deals to address the remaining gaps in the squad.
While Old Trafford’s recruitment team crunch the numbers and chase opportunities, Kambwala heads in a very different direction. The defender will travel to Italy to complete his medical and finalise personal terms, with a Serie A debut for Como on the horizon.
United let him go once. Thanks to those clauses, they will profit if his rise continues — and they have left the door open if they ever decide they want him back.
