Manchester City have drawn a bright red circle around Enzo Fernandez’s name.
The Chelsea midfielder is high on their list of targets, with sources indicating that new City boss Enzo Maresca is a firm admirer of his compatriot. The interest comes at a moment of potential upheaval in City’s engine room, with Rodri increasingly likely to depart before the window shuts.
That prospect has forced the Premier League champions to scan the market for a new midfield fulcrum. Fernandez fits the profile: technically sharp, press-resistant, aggressive without the ball. He also comes with a price tag to match.
Chelsea, who paid big money to bring the World Cup winner to Stamford Bridge, have previously slapped a valuation of around £120million on the 25-year-old. Club figures are described as “reluctant” sellers, but open to a deal if that figure is met. They intend to hold that line as far as possible, leaving little room for negotiation.
City, for now, are not prepared to go that high. They have already committed £116m on Elliot Anderson to reinforce their midfield this summer and are wary of paying another nine-figure fee in the same area of the pitch. The stance is clear: they are “exploring” a move for Fernandez, but not at Chelsea’s full asking price.
Bouaddi first, Fernandez if the dominoes fall
Inside the Etihad, Ayyoub Bouaddi remains the priority. City have been working on a deal with Lille for months, trying to prise the Moroccan midfielder away in what has become one of the window’s more drawn-out sagas.
The negotiations are still short of the decisive phase, but the numbers are stark. Any agreement for Bouaddi is expected to land around the £100m mark. If that happens, it naturally reduces the likelihood of City immediately committing a similar fee on Fernandez.
Yet the situation is fluid. And it might only take one big exit to change everything.
City are not just bracing for life after Rodri. Tijjani Reijnders is also being linked with a move away from Manchester, raising the possibility of a double vacancy in the heart of Maresca’s side. Lose both, and the logic shifts. Two out, two in suddenly looks less like extravagance and more like necessity.
Reijnders weighing up his future
Reijnders’ situation is becoming one to watch as the 1 September deadline creeps closer. Football Insider have reported that the Dutch midfielder could be tempted to push for a move if his role does not grow.
On paper, his numbers last season look healthy: 50 appearances in all competitions. The detail tells a different story. Only 19 of those came as Premier League starts. For a 28-year-old entering what should be his peak years, that imbalance matters.
His concern is straightforward. If there is no clear sign that his game time will increase under Maresca, he is prepared to consider his options elsewhere.
City, then, stand at a crossroads in midfield. Rodri’s future unresolved. Reijnders restless. Bouaddi in the crosshairs. Fernandez waiting behind a £120m wall at Stamford Bridge.
