Loïs Openda Joins Olympique Lyonnais on Loan from Juventus

Loïs Openda is on the move again. After just one season in Turin, the Belgian forward is set to swap Juventus for Olympique Lyonnais, in a deal that says as much about Juventus’ squad reshaping as it does about Lyon’s ambition under Paulo Fonseca.

Straight loan, clean numbers

Multiple outlets, including Sky and Fabrizio Romano, report that Openda will join Lyon on a straight loan for the 2026-27 season. No option to buy. No obligation. Just a one-year shot for Fonseca to plug a ready-made attacker into his system.

The figures are clear enough. Lyon are expected to pay around €3m to secure the loan, a tidy sum for Juventus for a player they are not ready to sell outright. Crucially for the Italians, Lyon will also cover Openda’s salary in full, removing any need for Juventus to subsidise his wages to push the move through.

That detail matters. Earlier in the week, there were suggestions Juventus might have to shoulder part of the cost to get him off the books for a year. Instead, they bank a fee, free up the wage bill, and retain full control of his long-term future.

From Turin to Lyon, via Fonseca

For Openda, it is a reset. His stint in Serie A never fully caught fire, despite flashes of the pace and direct running that made him such an attractive prospect. The image of him in black and white at Mapei Stadium back in January, battling through a tight Serie A contest against Sassuolo, already feels like a different chapter.

Now he walks into a very different environment. Lyon, under former Milan coach Paulo Fonseca, are rebuilding with a clear attacking identity. They are not tying themselves down with a permanent deal, but they are committing hard to the season: fee paid, full salary covered, no half measures.

For Fonseca, this is a forward he can throw straight into the front line, without the long-term politics of a permanent signing. For Openda, it is a season to prove he can lead the line in Ligue 1 and return to Juventus as a different proposition—or force a new path elsewhere.

A simple loan on paper, yes. But for club, coach and player, it feels like a decisive year.
