Liverpool Transfer Update: Ngumoha Stays, Gakpo Wants Out, Iraola Targets Scott

Liverpool’s summer plans are starting to take shape – and they revolve around keeping one teenage winger, calming another international star, and arming a new manager with a familiar midfield lieutenant.

Liverpool dig in over Rio Ngumoha

Bayern Munich came calling for Rio Ngumoha. Liverpool’s answer is simple: not this summer.

The German champions have identified the 17-year-old as a prime candidate for their left flank and were encouraged by early suggestions that Liverpool might be open to a deal. That stance has gone cold.

TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey reports that Liverpool now have “no plans whatsoever” to sell Ngumoha in this window. Instead, club sources indicate they intend to sit down with the former Chelsea prospect to discuss a new contract, a clear sign of how quickly his status has shifted inside Anfield.

The Secret Scout, the influential talent-spotting account on X, echoed that change in mood. When Ngumoha arrived in 2024, Liverpool were understood to be open to a structured sale to a European club – a move that would have allowed him to develop elsewhere while the Reds retained a degree of control over his future, with the teenager earmarked for the under-18s and under-21s.

His performances since then have rewritten the script.

“TSS understands Liverpool are aware of interest from top clubs in Europe including Bayern Munich who want to sign him this summer as per @David_Ornstein,” the account posted on June 5. It went on to explain that Liverpool’s initial openness to a sale has been replaced by a far firmer line after an outstanding season, adding that it would now take a “huge” fee for the club even to think about a deal and that Ngumoha is viewed internally as “one of the best wingers in the world”.

For a player still in his teens, that is a remarkable internal valuation. For Bayern, it is a brick wall.

Gakpo unsettled as Spurs circle

While one wide player is being ring-fenced, another is edging towards the exit.

According to Dutch outlet Soccer News, Cody Gakpo now “wishes to leave” Liverpool. The report links his stance directly to upheaval in the dugout, with Fenway Sports Group’s decision to sack Arne Slot and replace him with Andoni Iraola cited as the trigger.

Gakpo, a key figure for the Netherlands, has attracted “serious interest” from Tottenham Hotspur, the same report claims. Spurs are said to be working behind the scenes on a plan to persuade both the player and Liverpool over the coming period, sensing an opportunity as the forward weighs up his future under a new regime.

If Liverpool hold firm on Ngumoha but lose Gakpo, the shape of their attacking rebuild under Iraola will look very different to the one originally imagined when Slot was first lined up.

Iraola turns to Alex Scott for midfield reboot

Change is not confined to the wings. Iraola’s arrival is expected to spark a midfield refresh, and one of his former players sits near the top of Liverpool’s list.

Bournemouth’s Alex Scott is being lined up for a move to Anfield, with journalist Jamie Dickenson reporting on X that Liverpool are considering a £40 million bid for the 22-year-old. Bournemouth, though, value their standout midfielder at around £60m.

Scott is currently in Miami with Thomas Tuchel’s England squad after a superb season on the south coast and is set to make his Three Lions debut in a friendly against New Zealand on Saturday. Any transfer talk will have to work around that schedule, but the connections are obvious: Iraola knows Scott well from their time together at Bournemouth and could make him his first signing at Liverpool.

Manchester United and Tottenham are also monitoring the situation, with Scott known to have supported Spurs as a boy. That interest raises the stakes for Liverpool, who may need to move decisively if they want to reunite Iraola with a player he trusts.

Dickenson also notes that Liverpool are tracking £100m-rated RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, though Iraola is expected to be judged first on how effectively he can maximise last summer’s £415m outlay on the likes of Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez and others.

For now, the picture is clear enough. Ngumoha is going nowhere. Gakpo is restless. Scott is within reach but far from guaranteed.

Liverpool’s new era under Iraola will be defined by how those three stories end – and whether Anfield feels like a launchpad or a crossroads by the time the window closes.
