Liverpool's Summer Rebuild: Asencio and Barcola Focus
Liverpool’s summer rebuild has a clear shape now. The front line is being sharpened, the flanks reimagined – and, quietly, an opening has appeared at the heart of Real Madrid’s defence.
Asencio Door Opens
Raul Asencio has been told he can leave Madrid. That alone changes the tone of Liverpool’s window.
The Spanish centre-back, highly rated but short of guarantees at the Bernabeu, has been made available, with Liverpool among the clubs alerted to his situation. According to TEAMtalk, the Reds “have been sounded out over a potential move” for the Spain international after he “was informed he can leave the Bernabeu this summer”.
José Mourinho, now in charge at Real Madrid, has delivered the kind of message that often precedes a major move. He appreciates Asencio, rates him, but does not see “a long-term role for him in his plans” and has given the green light to an exit.
That puts the ball in Liverpool’s court. Andoni Iraola is described as “a long-time admirer” of Asencio, and the profile makes sense: a defender with experience to sit alongside, and perhaps guide, a young group still learning the demands of elite-level football.
Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet, both highly regarded, remain short on top-flight minutes. Asencio, if prised from Madrid, would immediately raise the floor of Iraola’s defensive options.
For now, though, it is an opening, not a negotiation.
TEAMtalk stress that a deal is not close. Liverpool are “monitoring the situation” and were receptive when Asencio’s representatives made contact, but the player’s stance is a major obstacle. His “determination to remain at Real Madrid means no formal discussions have progressed”.
That is the tension at the heart of this story: a club ready to talk, a coach willing to approve an exit, and a player not yet ready to walk away. If that position softens, Liverpool intend to be in the room. As TEAMtalk put it, “should Asencio eventually accept that his future lies away from the Santiago Bernabeu, Liverpool are expected to remain firmly in the conversation.”
Attack Takes Centre Stage
While the Asencio situation simmers, Liverpool’s primary focus is clear: firepower.
The club have already moved decisively in the market. Victor Munoz has arrived from Osasuna, adding another option in the forward line, and the long-anticipated signing of Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes is finally complete.
But Iraola and the recruitment team want more on the wings. They have zeroed in on Bradley Barcola as their main attacking target, with the Paris Saint-Germain winger viewed as the next big piece in the rebuild. His PSG team-mate Ibrahim Mbaye is also on the radar as the club consider at least one more wide addition.
This is not a gentle reshaping. It is a bold attempt to refresh the attack in one window.
Barcola Talks Turn Official
After weeks of noise, the Barcola pursuit has moved into a more serious phase.
On Monday, Fabrizio Romano revealed that Liverpool and PSG have now started “official club-to-club talks” over the France international. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano explained that “official conversations, Liverpool and PSG for Bradley Barcola, have started, and including the indication from Liverpool to PSG of the intention to bid for Barcola.”
PSG know exactly where Liverpool stand. The relationship between the clubs is described as good, the lines of communication open. But goodwill does not close deals.
Romano made it clear that Liverpool’s “initial indications” are “far away from the bid PSG expected”. That gap in valuation is why he insists Barcola to Liverpool is “not an imminent here we go, not today or not tomorrow”.
The financials are the sticking point. The numbers do not yet match, and both sides know it.
Even so, this is not a story that ends with a polite handshake and silence. “The conversations will continue,” Romano said, “because Liverpool want Barcola, and because Barcola loves the idea of joining Liverpool.”
On the player’s side, there is no drama. Personal terms are not expected to be a hurdle. Romano describes Barcola as “super tempted” by the Liverpool project, which hands the Premier League club a crucial advantage if they can find common ground with PSG.
The situation is now stripped back to its essentials: a willing player, an insistent buyer, and a seller holding out for the right price.
A Window With Edges
Liverpool’s summer business has moved beyond simple squad padding. Munoz and Jacquet are already through the door, Barcola is the subject of direct talks, Mbaye remains a live option, and Asencio’s name has entered the frame at centre-back.
One track is clear: upgrade the wings, inject pace and creativity, reshape the attack. The other is more delicate: wait to see if a Real Madrid defender accepts that his future lies elsewhere.
If Asencio changes his mind, Liverpool will be ready. If PSG soften their stance on Barcola’s fee, Liverpool will be waiting there too.
The question now is not whether Iraola’s squad will look different by the end of the window. It is how bold Liverpool are prepared to be in turning opportunity into upheaval.
