Liverpool Targets Ronald Araujo to Strengthen Defense
Liverpool have turned to Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo in a bid to plug the growing gaps in Andoni Iraola’s back line, opening talks over a season-long loan for the Uruguay international.
It is a move born of necessity as much as ambition.
A thin back line, and time running out
Iraola’s first summer at Anfield has already been hit hard in one area he could least afford: defense.
Joe Gomez limped out of pre-season and scans later confirmed he will miss roughly a month, ruling him out of the start of the campaign. Giovanni Leoni is still on the long road back from an ACL injury. Conor Bradley, earmarked as the club’s right-back of the future, remains sidelined and “a little bit far from returning,” in Iraola’s own words.
On top of that, Ibrahima Konate has already walked out the door, joining Real Madrid on a free at the end of his contract. One of Liverpool’s senior center-backs gone, another injured, the young heir at right-back unavailable.
The numbers simply don’t add up.
Iraola has been open about it. He has spoken repeatedly about the need for more depth in key areas, and the defense has been at the top of that list. Asked earlier this summer whether Liverpool might have to move for a right-back, he did not dodge the issue. It would, he admitted, depend heavily on Bradley’s recovery.
If Bradley were fully fit, the Spaniard said, Liverpool would feel “very happy, ready to go” and the question might never arise. But the reality is different. With one senior center-back gone, another in the treatment room, and his preferred right-back not yet close to a return, Iraola described his defensive depth as “very thin” and a “solution” as something they were actively trying to find.
The search has led them to Barcelona.
Araujo: experience and versatility
As first reported by Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool have now moved for Araujo, who made 24 La Liga appearances for Barça last season and is a regular with Uruguay.
At 27, he brings the kind of experience and presence Liverpool’s current defensive group lacks. Crucially, he offers versatility: comfortable at center-back, capable of operating at right-back. For a manager juggling injuries across the back line, that flexibility carries real weight.
Araujo would not just be a body through the door. He would arrive as an “experienced head at the back,” someone to steady a unit that has been stripped of both numbers and continuity in a single summer.
Youth signings, but no quick fixes
Liverpool have not been idle in the market, but the profile of their arrivals underlines why Araujo is now on the agenda.
Jeremy Jacquet, a highly rated 20-year-old defender, has joined but is yet to kick a ball in a Reds shirt as the club manage his own return from injury. Victor Munoz has come in to bolster the attack rather than the back line.
These are signings for tomorrow. Iraola needs help today.
With the new season fast approaching, the Spaniard is preparing for his first match in the Anfield dugout this weekend, a home friendly against AS Monaco. It will be the first time the Liverpool crowd see him in charge on their own turf.
Whether they also get an early glimpse of Ronald Araujo in red before the real business starts is now the question hanging over the final stretch of Liverpool’s summer.
