Liverpool's Bold Pursuit of Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye
Liverpool have pushed their chips to the middle of the table for Bradley Barcola – and they are not coming alone for Paris Saint-Germain. The Premier League club have cranked up their pursuit of the 23-year-old winger and are now prepared to break the £100m barrier, while also moving in parallel for teenage prospect Ibrahim Mbaye.
This is no tentative enquiry. This is a full-scale offensive.
From Diomande disappointment to Barcola obsession
Liverpool’s focus has snapped firmly onto Barcola after they missed out on Yan Diomande. The winger had initially chosen PSG, only for Real Madrid to swoop in and hijack the move. That collapse has sharpened Liverpool’s intent. Barcola has been convinced by the Anfield project, attracted by the promise of more minutes under new head coach Andoni Iraola.
PSG, sensing the direction of travel, have already started to plan for life without him. Targets have been lined up: Maghnes Akliouche from Monaco and Ajax’s Mika Godts are both on their radar as potential replacements. It is a clear signal from Paris – they know a major sale is coming.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Monday that “official club-to-club talks” are underway between Liverpool and PSG for Barcola. Those talks began with a sizeable gap in valuation. Liverpool opened at around €100m (£86m). PSG responded by planting their flag at €150m (£128.5m).
The standoff has not lasted long.
Liverpool raise the stakes
According to BBC Sport, Liverpool have now indicated they are ready to go to £100m (€117m) to get Barcola through the door. It is a bold escalation and a clear statement of intent from a club determined to reshape its forward line quickly.
The two clubs are edging closer, but there is still a negotiation to be won. PSG want to cash in at a level befitting a key attacking asset in his early twenties. Liverpool want value, but they also want their man in the building as soon as possible.
One major obstacle, though, is already out of the way. Personal terms are not expected to be a problem. If the clubs settle on a fee, the deal should move fast.
A double-winger rebuild
Barcola is not the only PSG wide player in Liverpool’s sights. The Merseyside club are working on an ambitious double swoop, with 18-year-old Ibrahim Mbaye also firmly on their radar.
French reporter Fabrice Hawkins has revealed that Liverpool have made contact with PSG over Mbaye, who caught the eye with Senegal at the World Cup. The teenager operates primarily from the right, complementing Barcola’s preference for the left flank. For Liverpool, the appeal is obvious: two young, high-ceiling wingers, each naturally suited to opposite sides of the pitch, arriving in one summer.
It is the kind of structural rebuild that can change the face of an attack for years.
On Tuesday night, Romano added another layer to the Mbaye story. Liverpool have reached out to his new agent, Jorge Mendes, as they look to position themselves at the front of the queue. Mbaye has interest from Bundesliga clubs and had been close to joining RB Leipzig, but that move collapsed after the Diomande-to-PSG deal fell apart.
Now, Liverpool’s project sits at the top of his list. Talks are expected to continue, with Anfield increasingly seen as the likeliest destination if the numbers fall into place.
A new-look Liverpool front line?
Put together, the picture is striking. Liverpool are not tinkering at the edges. They are trying to rewire both flanks in one window, betting heavily on youth, pace and upside.
If they can drag Barcola’s fee into an acceptable zone and close out Mbaye’s situation ahead of Germany’s best, Anfield could soon be watching a very different set of wingers driving at opposition full-backs.
The question now is simple: who blinks first in Paris, and how far are Liverpool truly willing to go to get this double deal over the line?
