Liverpool Desperately Needs Right Winger, Says Jamie Carragher

Jamie Carragher sounds the alarm: Liverpool “desperately” need a right winger, not another left-sided forward.

As talks open between Paris Saint-Germain and The Blues over Bradley Barcola, the former Liverpool defender has made it clear he doesn’t see the Frenchman as any kind of answer to the Mohamed Salah question at Anfield.

Barcola, highly rated and exciting, operates primarily from the left. That’s exactly Carragher’s issue.

“No, he plays on the opposite flank!”

When Sky Sports posed the idea on X that Barcola could be Salah’s replacement, Carragher shot it down instantly: For Carragher, the problem is structural, not stylistic. Liverpool’s squad is already weighted towards the left, with Rio, Gakpo and Wirtz all capable of operating from that side. On the right, where Salah has owned the position for years, there is no natural heir in sight.

“LFC currently have three players who could play from the left in Rio/Gakpo/Wirtz & no one who plays from the right,”

he pointed out, highlighting what he sees as a glaring imbalance in the recruitment strategy.

The message is clear. As Salah’s long-term future continues to hover in the background, Carragher believes Liverpool can’t afford to get this one wrong: the next major attacking signing, in his view, has to bring goals and threat from the right — not add to a crowded left flank.
