Liverpool Fans Demand Clarity on Jeff Bezos Minority Investment Proposal
The Liverpool supporters group, Spirit of Shankly, has called on Fenway Sports Group for clear answers after reports surfaced linking Amazon founder Jeff Bezos to a significant minority stake in the Premier League club. The fan organization has urgently requested a meeting to understand what this potential investment means for the club's ownership and future direction.
Supporters Want Details on Proposed 30% Stake Sale
According to ESPN, Spirit of Shankly (SoS) sent a formal letter to Liverpool demanding transparency about how the reported sale of a 30% share will affect control over football operations at Anfield. The consortium, reportedly including Bezos, is nearing an agreement, prompting fans to seek immediate clarification on possible boardroom shifts and their impact.
Protecting Club Values Remains Top Priority
"We reiterated that, given the events that led to FSG's purchase of the club, who owns it and how they control it - putting the interests of LFC and its supporters first - is fundamental to us all," stated SoS."The latest report of a 30% sale and the consortium set up to buy it is significant. The ownership and custodianship of our club is paramount to SoS and all supporters.""We have witnessed similar sales at other clubs resulting in notable changes in the running of that club and football operations, leading to decisions and behaviours that many would not want to see at Liverpool."
The group expressed deep concern about how new investors might influence key decisions within the club, emphasizing the need to safeguard Liverpool’s core principles amid takeover rumors.
Consortium Includes Wealthy Investors But Limited Sports Experience
While Bezos is among the world’s richest individuals with an estimated personal fortune of £210 billion and owns assets like The Washington Post and Blue Origin, he lacks experience investing in sports teams. Despite previous NFL connections, this would be his first major stake in football.
The investment group also features Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. Leading the consortium is Amit Bhatia, son-in-law of Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal and the only member with direct sports management experience. Bhatia recently ended an 18-year tenure as co-owner and director of Queens Park Rangers.
FSG Open to Outside Investment Amid Soaring Club Value
Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool’s parent company, purchased the club for £300 million in 2010. Today, its value is estimated at roughly £4.5 billion. FSG confirmed last month that Bhatia’s consortium had shown interest in a strategic minority investment.
Fans await further details from FSG on how much influence the new investors will hold, including any potential board seats, before the deal is finalized.
